Edgar Summers
So...last week the minister at my church asked me to play something for Mother's day. I've always had trouble finding songs for this day. There are older ones that seem way too corny and I can't seem to think of anything that works. My only idea so far is to do an exerpt from "Bohemian Rhapsody" Mama just killed a man, Put a gun against his head Pulled the trigger now he's dead.. Probably won't do that one. Help me out friends. timwat
Most of the suggestions I find are love songs that get re-purposed - stuff like the Celene Dion "Because You Loved Me" from the Redford/Pffeifer movie. Maybe "Julia"? - John wrote it for his mum... ..
eric
How about "Mother" by Pink Floyd? Mother, do you think theyll drop the bomb? Mother, do you think theyll like this song? Mother, do you think theyll try to break my balls? Ooooowaa mother, should I build a wall? Mother, should I run for president? Mother, should I trust the government? Mother, will they put me in the firing line? Ooooowaa is it just a waste of time? Hush, my baby. baby, dont you cry. Mommas gonna make all of your nightmares come true. Mommas gonna put all of her fears into you. Mommas gonna keep you right here under her wing. She wont let you fly, but she might let you sing. Mommas gonna keep baby cozy and warm. Oooo babe. Oooo babe. Ooo babe, of course mommas gonna help build a wall. Mother, do you think shes good enough, For me? Mother, do you think shes dangerous, To me? Mother will she tear your little boy apart? Ooooowaa mother, will she break my heart? Hush, my baby. baby, dont you cry. Mommas gonna check out all your girlfriends for you. Momma wont let anyone dirty get through. Mommas gonna wait up until you get in. Momma will always find out where youve been. Mommas gonna keep baby healthy and clean. Oooo babe. Oooo babe. Ooo babe, youll always be baby to me. Tim D
These posts got me to shuffle through my memories. Here're a few songs to consider -- some serious, some not so much, and some beyond the pale. "The Mom Song" by Go Fish "Stacey's Mom" by Fountains of Wayne "Volvo Soccer Driving Mom" by Everclear "Thank You Mom" by Good Charlotte "My Mom" by Kimya Dawson (well -- maybe not!) "Mother" by the Police (again, maybe not!) "Magik Mother Invocation" by Gong "Tie Your Mother Down" by Queen "Mother" by Afro Celt Sound System (beautiful but hard to pull off as a solo?) "Bad Girl Once (Soccer Mom Now)" by Deborah Holland "God Bless Mom" by The Frames "I Love My Mom" by The Roches (harmony is crucial!) These two go together: "This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush "Watch the Woman's Hands" by Paula Cole How 'bout another medley? "Your Mother Should Know" by the Beatles "Does Your Mother Know" by ABBA Two beautiful but very sad songs: "The Mothers of the Disappeared" by U2 "They Dance Alone" by Sting Whatever you do, stay away from "Kyle's Mom Is..." mate stubb
"Mother" by the Police (again, maybe not!) I'm a fan of Stewart's delivery on this song. Dude's got issues with his mom. Well the telephone is ringing, Is that my mother on the phone? Telephone is ringing, Is that my mother on the phone? The telephone is screaming, Won't she leave me alone? The telephone is ringing, Is that my mother on the phone? Well every girl that I go out with Becomes my mother in the end. Every girl I go out with Becomes my mother in the end. Well I hear my mother calling, But I don't need her as a friend. Well every girl I go out with Becomes my mother in the end. Oh, Oh mother Oh mother dear please listen And don't devour me. Oh mother dear please listen Don't devour me. Oh women please have mercy Let this poor boy be. Oh mother dear please listen And don't devour me. Oh mother...... Tim D
"Mother" by the Police (again, maybe not!) I'm a fan of Stewart's delivery on this song. Dude's got issues with his mom. Wasn't that Andy Summers doing the vocals on that song? If so, his lyrics have issues with both Mom and, ahem, a certain companion ("Be My Girl"). My favorite Stewart Copeland vocals are on his Klark Kent project (like "Too Cool to Kalypso"). Cheers, Tim www.soundclick.com/TimothyDowd

Tonysounds
"Happiness is a Warm Gun": Mother Superior jump the gun... Or maybe John's solo turn, "Mother": Mother, you had me but I never had you, I wanted you but you didn't want me, So I got to tell you, Goodbye, goodbye. Farther, you left me but I never left you, I needed you but you didn't need me, So I got to tell you, Goodbye, goodbye. Children, don't do what I have done, I couldn't walk and I tried to run, So I got to tell you, Goodbye, goodbye. Mama don't go, Daddy come home. Doesn't anybody write songs when they LIKE their mom? Turns out only girlfriend-beating (allegedly) rappers write nice songs about their mama, like Chris Brown did: "Mama" [intro] This one right here Goes out to my mama, (This Goes out to mama) Your mama, And everybody mama (ha ha) Here we go listen listen [Verse 1] I remember Saturday mornins Me wakin up to mama in the kitchen cookin to Sam Cook and I was just a young dude, watchin mornin cartoons, waitin for mama to braid my hair I used to hate to get it done, cause shed braid it too tight My mama always gave a style she knew I would like, and then I would go outside and play, shed sit on the front porch While me and Rob played ball [bridge:] Mama always did little things like that Mama always will know I love her for that For all the things that you used to do Mama I dedicate this one to you [Chorus] Its straight from the heart This is your song Youre my lucky charm so you already know, That I'm gonna sing this one for you, so let me sing this one for you From every tour, every show Youre my lucky charm, go wherever I go Mama I'm gonna sing this one to you, mama let me sing this one to you [Verse 2] Shes like the mother of Tappahannock, VA Everybody knew miss Joyce, where we stayed All heads said she was cool, nothing that she wouldnt do What about CB, she was known I acted a fool With the little money that she made She took the bed and made it all OK Nights at the daycare, when we had to stay there Always held it down, so I gotta thank you now [bridge] [Chorus] Its straight from the heart This is your song Youre my lucky charm so (so you already know) you already know, That I'm gonna sing this one for you, so let me sing this one for you From every tour (from every tour o yea yea), every show Youre my lucky charm (youre my lucky charm),go wherever I go Mama I'm gonna sing this (I'm gonna sing it) one to you, (Just let me sing it) Mama let me sing (whoa yea) this one to you [Verse 3] (oooo) Mama I thank you for all youve done (oooo) I thank God everyday Im your son (oh) (You gave) You gave me everything that I need But lovin me unconditionally Everybody say M-O-M-M-A Everybody say mama M-O-M-M-A You know that this is your song [Chorus] Its straight from the heart (oh mama) This is your song (aye) Youre my lucky charm so you already know, (you already know) That I'm gonna sing this one for you, so let me sing this one for you From every tour (aye), every show (mama I love you so) Youre my lucky charm, go wherever I go (wherever I go) Mama I'm gonna sing this one to you (yeah), Mama let me sing this one to you [interlude] This right here goes out to every mama all over the world Mama I know I might be bad at times (mama I'm gonna sing this one to you) I might get on your nerves, but I still love you (mama let me sign this one to you) You always gonna be my mama Mama, mama, my mama Mama I'm gonna sing this (ooh hoo) one to you Mama let me sing this (ooh hoo) one to you Mama I love you Dont put nothin above you (save this one for you) Ill save this one for you Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me. Tonysounds
Another great mother song by Queen (Roger Taylor, vocals, lyrics, music): "Loser In The End" Mama's got a problem She don't know what to say Her little baby boy Has just left home today She's got to be the loser in the end She's got to be the loser in the end Misuse her and you'll lose her as a friend She's ma on whom you can always depend ooh She washed and fed and clothed and cared For nearly twenty years And all she gets is Goodbye Ma And the night times for her tears She's got to be the loser in the end She's got to be the loser in the end Misuse her and you'll lose her as a friend She's ma on whom you can always depend ooh So listen mothers ev'rywhere To just one mothers son You'll get forgotten on the way If you don't let them have their fun Forget regrets and just remember It's not so long since you were young You're bound to be the loser in the end You're bound to be the loser in the end They'll chose their new shoes That's not far to bend You're ma on whom they can always depend ooh ooh Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me. NewImprov
Cosmic Slop by Funkadelic comes to mind. Despite its theme, the sentiment is pretty strong: Ahhh, ahh-ah-ahhhhh, hear my mother call Ahhh, ahh-ah-ahhhhh, hear my mother call I was one of five born to my mother An older sister and three young brothers We've seen it hard, we've seen it kind of rough But always with a smile, she was sure to try to hide The fact from us that life was really tough I can hear my mother call I can hear my mother call (Ahhh, ahh-ah-ahhhhh) Late at night I hear her call Oh lord, lord I hear her call She said, "Father, father it's for the kids (Ahhh, ahh-ah-ahhhhh) Any and every thing I did. Please, please don't judge me too strong. Lord knows I meant no wrong. Lord knows I meant no wrong." Then the devil sang "Would you like to dance with me? (Ooh-ahh-ooh) We're doin' the cosmic slop." (Ooh-ahh-ooh) (x3) She was well known through the ghetto Tricks would come and then they'd go The neighbors would talk and call her Jezebel But always with a smile, she was sure to try to hide The fact from us that she was catching hell, hey! Hear my mother call I can hear my mother call (Ahhh, ahh-ah-ahhhhh) Late at night I hear her call Oh lord, lord I hear her call She says, "Father, father it's for the kids (Ahhh, ahh-ah-ahhhhh) Any and every thing I did. Please, please don't judge me too strong. Lord knows I meant no wrong. Lord knows I meant no wrong." Lord! (Ahhh, ahh-ah-ahhhhh) Hear my mother call (Ahhh, ahh-ah-ahhhhh) Hear my mother call She says, "Father, father it's for the kids (ooh-ah-ooh) Any and every thing I did. (ooh-ah-ooh) Please, please don't judge me too strong.
