Good blues-ish crunchy amp for a PRS?

Hey guys,

Just starting college this fall, and as a congrats present from my girlfriend, she's buying me a PRS. I wasn't even supposed to know what kind of guitar it was at all, but she slipped up and mentioned it was from the SE line. ButI digress, thats not the purpose of my question.

I've heard that certain amps sound better with certain brands of guitars (the combo I keep hearing about is a Gibson played through a Marshall) and I figured I'd pass it by you guys for some suggestions.

My dream tone is something between Slash and Coheed & Cambria..... kind of a rock-blues-progressive sound.

Any amp brand suggestions?

A Marshall is a good bet to deliver what you're looking for. So is a Stiletto series Boogie. Of course, those are the choices if money is no object. IF you're on a budget, try out the new Line 6 Spider Valve combos. They deliver a tremendous bang for the buck. I wouldn't be ashamed to play one anywhere.

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

As for budget... due to student loans coming in I can afford to spend a decent amount. I'm only looking for a personal amp, so 30w is about as high as I could possibly go... and even that is a bit. I had a 15w marshall for a while, and that was absolutely killer. I'll see if I can get a similar amp again.

Oh, yeah! Forceman speaks the truth! Try an Orange Tiny Terror and an Orange closed-back 2x12 with Celestion Vintage 30s- you'll love that amp and cab!

If I hadn't already bought a Fuchs Lucky 7 (for a ridiculously great deal) just before trying out the TT, I would've definitely snapped up the Orange head & cab! (And I still want one, anyways!)

Approach the TT this way: Set the TT's output to 7 Watts. Volume-knob on the guitar all the way down, Volume control on the amp all the way up, amp's Tone control down quite low (almost all the way off), amp's Gain control anywhere between 9 o'clock and about 2 o'clock. (As you get familiar with the TT, set the Gain higher or lower to taste, and as needed set the Volume lower to reign-in the decibels when needed. Also try out the full 15 Watts mode for somewhat tighter, cleaner tones, although it makes little difference in sheer volume.)

Bring up the guitar's vol-knob gradually, and adjust the amp's tone-knob to taste, till you get a nice clean tone. Play a while like that. Then gradually bring the guitar's vol-knob up a little bit it a time, finding graduations of overdrive and distortion as you go.

This amp and cab has a fantastic grindy, clangin' rhythm 'kerr-RAAANG' that is killer for Marshally flavored classic rock, punk, etc. It's like early led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Pete Townshend, the Clash, etc. in a can! I tried out the TT and that cab with a Tele-like G&L ASAT and an SG-like U.S. Masters Hornet (if you're not familiar with 'em, both very nice high-end guitars, not at all budget knock-offs). I think that a TT and that cab (or maybe their 1x12) would be very nice for you and your PRS!

I'd be dead on for the TT if I had the money, unfortunately its almost 5 times more expensive than either the Marshall or the Vox... but I'm sure I'll get it eventually.

After some consideration, I think I'll get the Vox, but the 30w version and not the 15w. The 30w isn't much more expensive, and its got a knob to turn down the wattage, so I could practice on 15w if I wanted, but still punch it up if nobody is home.

Sorry! I misinterpreted your budget statement. Best of luck, may the Vox (or whatever you get) bring you wailin' good times!

Yeah we got the 30 watt Vox for my nephew and he loves it. He wanted something that could sound like my Marshall but that was a bit to expensive for him at this time.

Also this Blackheart combo is a killer deal. Little tube amps are wonderful because you can get them raging without pissing other people off.

I would order that, but unfortunately I live in Canada and musician's friend doesn't ship here. I might talk to the shops here in town and see if I can get it brung in for me.

When you get your guitar take it to a store that has both those amps and see what you like. We have a small marshall and the 15 & 30 watt versions of the VOX. For us the Vox get used more often. But then we don't have the Marshall with all the effects built in.

Man, after hearing that Blackheart, I want to buy it. However, after looking at their site, its impossible.

They ship to the UK, and Romania, and Croatia, but be damned if they ship to Canada.
