Tonysounds Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Yeah, I did it again: NordStage being delivered today. I can't decide whether Im insane and keep expecting different results from repetitive actions, or whether I just really have a love/hate relationship with this womanI mean, keyboard. OS 3.12.please be good to me. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
JJSSR Keys Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Who are ye who are so wise in the ways of science? But really, if the NS has got the somethin' for you, it's $$$ well spent. Well, spent anyway...... Alesis QS8, Roland Juno G, Roland XP-10 (ret.), Hammond XK-2, Peavey KB5
Joe Muscara Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Wow. At this point, Tony, you're practically a Nord (Stage) distributor. Good luck with it, maybe it will work out this time! Moonglow Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Congrats.....I think! The new pianos represent an improvement, but quite frankly I was expecting more.....they are still "not there" yet, IMHO. The updates to the synth section are nice, as are the ability to see the numeric increments on the display when adjusting parameters, and being able to copy one panel to the other. Within the extern section, while some different velocity curves are now available (nice!), MIDI channels still can not be stored at the patch level, which seriously limits the NS as a controller for more than two external synths or modules (i.e., one for each panel). This latter deficiency represents my main gripe at the moment. "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." - George Bernard Shaw

Tonysounds Posted September 9, 2008 Author Posted September 9, 2008 Yeah, I know, I know. Im usually very clear and quick about what works for me and what doesnt; and once I decide somethings not for me, I dont waffle. This piece of gear has befuddled me though. I can say one thing with absolute certainty: if they made an Electro with a a weighted keyboard, Id have bought it and kept it a LONG time ago. (And it would sit under my 73 Electro onstage.) And I know, get an Electro rack and use it with a controller, but I really do want something quick, immediate, and inspiring to play, and minimal extra b.s. and on so many levels the Stage worksalmost on as many levels as the Stage doesnt work. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
ITGITC Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 I can say one thing with absolute certainty: if they made an Electro with a a weighted keyboard, Id have bought it and kept it a LONG time ago. (And it would sit under my 73 Electro onstage.) Yeah. But then all the folks that buy an Electro for the organ emulation would really bitch and moan. And that would make this place... well, it would make this place feel like home. And we wouldn't want that. Tonysounds Posted September 9, 2008 Author Posted September 9, 2008 Id probably be one of those bitchers n moaners; but thats why the weighted version would sit under my non-weighted Electro onstage! (I really only recently came around to the EP side of the Electro in the last 18 months; I dug the organs!) Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
David Loving Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 No matter how many sets of golf clubs and putters I bought, I never could break 80. "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

OS 3.12.please be good to me. I've sat down and played the Nord Stage several times hoping to make a connection. After all, it contains my favorite sound set plus a few extras. Yet, I play it and still feel that something is missing. I hope it has been added and gets delivered this time around. eric Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Tony, it was good talking and catching up yesterday, man. You and I are a lot alike...I've been casually thinking about another Nord Stage myself. Those things have an addictive quality to them. For me, it can't quite hit the end-all be-all board, but it is really darn close. Enjoy and put me on speed dial if you sell it! You should start marking your Stages so you can see how many boomerang back to you over the years.
Chris Link Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 No matter how many sets of golf clubs and putters I bought, I never could break 80. Ain't it the truth. My best round ever was an 83 (+12) that included a quadruple bogey eight and two lip-out birdie putts. Aaaaaargh! Of course, I've never been the change-clubs-latest-fad kind of guy. I played 15 years with a set of "fitted" Pings. While perusing drivers at a demo day, the Ping rep did all the measurements and asked "Did you say you play the red dot irons?. I have you one degree the other way". Turns out my Dad's old pro had mis-measured or sent the order in wrong or whatever and I'd been playing the wrong-fitted irons all these years. (I got a good deal for what it's worth.) When I told my Mom (both my Dad and the old pro being deceased several years), she said, "Well, Andy did used to drink a lot, you know." Kind of the old-school flask under the counter and in his golf bag kind of pro. Sheesh. Of course, that best-ever round (and most of my other best rounds) came with the old misfit irons. Karl Sutton Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 I've loved my electro 61 for the last three years now but have been thinking about selling it to get the stage - can't decide between a 73 or 76. I don't mind the electro action that much even for piano, I did play a NS88 at guitar center & liked the feel quite a bit. (I can't decide if I should go with a NS73 on top & use my QS8 for the bottom, or get a NS76 & use my VK8 on top) So I'm just curious what some of the love/hate things are that you all have gone through with the stage - since you seem to hear nothin' but love for the electros. B3bluesman59 Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 MisterDregs said: Of course, that best-ever round (and most of my other best rounds) came with the old misfit irons. Go figure. ______________________________________________________________ In golf when you start to get your scores down into the 80s the key to breaking 80 is not new irons or new drivers or even playing with misfit clubs. They key is to practice the short game...chipping or pitching onto the green from close range and making putts. As you know all the new drivers and the new golf balls enable all of us to hit the ball 15 or 20 yards further off the tee...but you still gotta put the ball on the green and you still have to make the putt. We spend an hour hitting the driver on the practice range and then only 10 minutes putting. And that is the reason most amateurs will never break 90, let alone 80.
MusicaL Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 So, what's the verdict Tony???? Is it a keeper this time??? aL Gear: Yamaha MODX8, Mojo 61, NS2 73, C. Bechstein baby grand.
NewImprov Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 I can relate to the deeply felt ambivalence expressed here about the Nord Electro and Stage. I've never owned either, but every time I see a band with one, I love the sound from the audience, and I want to buy one. I just saw a band locally in a really small space, they were an modern Americana band, kinda Wilco meets The Band. The keyboardist had an Electro, and he mostly used an acoustic piano sound, and it just sat perfectly in the mix. This was just coming from a Mackie powered speaker onstage, and the sound cut through just enough, but didn't overwhelm. Ditto for the B3 sounds. Made me want one all over again. But every time I play one, it just doesn't feel right to me. I dunno what it is, but I just don't connect with it. I want to like it, but I just don't. Sometimes I think I should just buy it and make myself fall in love with it, like an arranged marriage or something. JeffLearman Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 N&I, just remember the usual advice about getting married: The stuff you don't like about him or her? It won't get better!
Tonysounds Posted September 11, 2008 Author Posted September 11, 2008 Too early for a verdict. All the things I love about it are instantly appreciated: the keyboard feels very nice, yet different; the piano sounds through headphones and studio monitors are really very very good, and dont have that static texture that all my romplers have; all kinds of goodies are a button push or knob twirl away (not buried in menus or multiple button pushes), and its ultra light and cool looking. I can get over its midi inadequacies; I can even overlook that its autowah2 is NOT an autowah (like on the Electro). What always kills this my love affair with the Stage is the way it sounds through amplification. And the last Stage I had, I worked at for 2 months to sound good, but finally gave up. Ive got a few different rigs (1-Roland M120 line mixer driving a pair of Yorkville 300k stereo combos, which really do sound excellent; 2-Roland M120 line mixer driving a QSC PLX1804 driving a pair of Ev-S1202 cabinets; Mackie VLZ1404 mixer driving an old but great BGW power amp driving a 3way cabinet with a 15 EV, 8 inch and horn), but the pianos drive me nuts through all of them. This Stage has version 3.04 right now, which I will get around to updating after Ive experimented with this OS. Im taking it to rehearsal tonite and will play out of Rig #3. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
Joe Muscara Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 It's fun to make fun of you about it, Tony, especially those of us who understand your persistence. But I hope this one doesn't break your heart too. "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! David Loving Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 I feel the same about roland pianos. The idea of them is great to the point I consider getting one, then I listen to it and the same old dislike surfaces. "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."
Karl Sutton Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Tony maybe you just need the infamous EV Sxa360 or the Accugrooves! It's only money! Yamaha P22 Upright / Nord Stage 2 SW73
Tonysounds Posted September 12, 2008 Author Posted September 12, 2008 I actually did scope out the Accugrooves rig...it was nice, but it didn't do anything my present rigs do now. Honestly. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
