MelL Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 Does anyone know if such an animal exists? A friend of mine had her place broken into and it reminded me of having my own place broken into last year, just a few months before I bought my Jaguar, and how I surely would have lost her (my bass) since she is so light and easy to cart away. So are there solutions for guitar players or is up to the individual imagination on how to secure our investments? "I walk. I talk. I shop. I sneeze. I'm gonna be a fireman when the floods roll back. 1111000 Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Instrument insurance. Or you can do what I did if you're extra paranoid: when I lived in a dormitory I used a bike lock through the handle of the bass case (which I had locked, of course) and had the bike lock looped through something heavy, like a bedpost.

MelL Posted September 8, 2008 Author Posted September 8, 2008 Ah, I had not though of a hard case. I have mine sitting out on a stand, so I had been trying to figure out a scheme with the bass itself. And those plates you glue to things, like for PCs, are definitely out. lol "I walk. I talk. Rocky McDougall Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Get a bike cable lock, drill 1" hole in upper horn....oh, nevermind. Just make sure it's insured. MelL Posted September 8, 2008 Author Posted September 8, 2008 Crazy thing is, when my place was broken into, they skipped my computer and my MP3 player, which was sitting out in the open, but opted for my digital camera, a jar with some odd change in it, and a 99 cent flashlight from Wal-Mart. But I just know my Jaguar would have disappeared into the night, and I didn't have renters insurance until later that day. "I walk. I talk. I shop. I sneeze. The Geoff Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 There's some sort of tracking chip available - I read about it recently, but can't remember it's name. I'll check further.... Yup, here it is... http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Accessories/Security/SNAGG_Microchip.html G. EddiePlaysBass Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Aren't we a bit paranoid here? Sure, WE know the value of certain instruments but a bass is tall and even if it is light, not easy to carry. Which is possibly why they skipped your computer too. I would imagine that for a burglar the first concern is portability and then how to get rid of it if he has no personal use for it, which is harder to do with a bass. Then again, you guys have pawn shops and the likes, so maybe I'm wrong. "I'm a work in progress." Micky Barnes The Ross Brown Shirt World Tour
Edro Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Has anyone here ever had a bass stolen? The only people I hear about having gear stolen where I live are guitar players. GeoffB: Carvin also uses the SNAGG chip in all of their instruments except for the kits. The only bass I have now from them is a fretless kit. Shouldn't have to worry about that one being stolen because there is no logo on the headstock. I think Bottomgottem and Jeremy C have the best ideas.
b5pilot Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Sorry about the breakins. That sucks. If theft really is a problem for you and you don't have insurance try looking at gun safes. They should be big enough to put in a couple of basses. Or hire Chuck Norris! Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it. http://www.myspace.com/theeldoradosband
1111000 Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Has anyone here ever had a bass stolen? The only people I hear about having gear stolen where I live are guitar players. I met a guy at a Battle of the Bands gig once; he was a really good slapper type, working a Peavey Cirrus. I was telling him I liked his playing backstage and that I liked his bass tone and he got pretty frustrated looking. It turns out his Warwick had been stolen out of his house some two or three months ago--some situation where he fell asleep and some roommate's girlfriend's neo-Nazi step-brother stole it out from under their noses and then no one would confront him on it. So he's on the Cirrus now but he seemed really upset about losing the Warwick. I have no idea how much it was worth, but I'm guessing several $$$.
Rocky McDougall Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 My guess is that the average theif would not know a $10,000 vintage bass from a $100.00 starter bass. 5 string Mike Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 I saw on World's Dumbest Criminals where the bassist from a band (who is known, but I can't remember the name right now) had his van get broken into and his 2 basses stolen. He went to the local pawn shop to ask if anyone brought them in there, and while he is telling the guy his story, in walks a guy with his basses. The bassist played it cool and secretly called the cops while the pawn shop owner stalled the guy until the cops showed up. Most of us probably wouldn't have been that cool headed about it, but it worked out good for that guy.
