Griffinator Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Painted Black You mean Paint It Black? Nebraska, probably not much difference than here in SW VA - I think I can safely offer the following as sure crowd pleasers (I wouldn't play them myself, because they're just so f***ing trite, but you asked...) Brown Eyed Girl Mustang Sally Sweet Home Alabama Wonderful Tonight More as soon as I can forget about those (the PAIN!!!!) and clear my head.... A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
Rampdog Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Ya' know... The one song in your list that jumped out at me was Joes Garage... Great tune and I never hear anyone do it... If it ain't fun...why do it...? http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=778394&content=music
Griffinator Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Ya' know... The one song in your list that jumped out at me was Joes Garage... Great tune and I never hear anyone do it... Dude, it's such a huge risk playing Zappa live. We tried doing "You Are What You Is" once in a cover context like this one. It was met with a room filled with blank stares and gaping mouths. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.

Dude, it's such a huge risk playing Zappa live. We tried doing "You Are What You Is" once in a cover context like this one. It was met with a room filled with blank stares and gaping mouths. We have done Joe's Garage in the past and it does go over pretty good the part when it goes "I guess you only get one chance to play a song that goes like" we break into Wild Thing and then go back into Joe's Garage It's preety fun and you can jamm it out forever if you want Why do you lay down? I say that it beats standing up! whats got you feeling so down? I hold up my empty cup!

Eric VB Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Ok, 34 covers + 12 originals = 46 tunes. As a rule of thumb I like to think that the average song is 3 minutes long. Thus for a 4-hour gig you have to play 3 hours worth of music (taking into account breaks), or 180 minutes, which is roughly 60 songs. Yes, you can jam them all out if that's what your audience likes to hear. With 46 songs you can fill a night if you average just under 4 minutes per song. Speaking of audiences, do you know who will be at your gig? Based on the titles I recognize I'd say you're good to go for a 40+ male audience. Maybe a biker bar? Not sure what a crowd pleaser would be in that context, but I'd guess any of Skynyrd's hit songs (not B sides). If you're playing to a crowd of women that want to dance you may have a rough go. Some of the suggestions so far would be crowd pleasers to a dancing audience, e.g. "Mony Mony". But unless you only have one dance song on your set list I don't recommend getting jammy with it. Dance tunes are short on purpose (unless you're doing aerobics at the gym). Ok, I looked up the songs I wasn't familiar with. Any chance you'd want to be a Widespread Panic tribute band instead? Never head of them, although I have heard of other Athens, GA bands such as R.E.M. and B-52's. I see according to Wikipedia that they are successful despite not getting a lot of airplay. So it could just be that I'm the only one out of the loop on this one. Someone must be a big Van Morrison fan, too. Lot's of B sides, but none of his big hits? You can own an audience with "Brown Eyed Girl" even though most cover bands have played it to death so much they would rather have their eyes gouged out with a rusty spoon than have to play it again. Just sayin'. I think most cover bands try to keep it to one song per artist. Or maybe up to three by the same group and that's it. You can always consult Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. James Maguire has several top 100 song lists for each year from 1950-2006. I believe his lists are based on Top 40 charts. You could always ask the venue what their regulars like to hear. Don't tell them you need 15 songs to fill out your set list, but just say you're looking to add something new that his crowd is sure to like. Just one last thought. It's a lot easier to sell a song if it's a big hit. By that I mean that even a crappy rendition of a Beatles hit will get a bigger response than a great performance of something no one has ever heard before. That's part of the reason why certain audiences will prefer a cover band over an original band. Original bands, IMO, have to work harder to sell their music. Unless you know your audience I'd say you've got your work cut out for you to sell your set list to them. (So go prove me wrong!)
picker Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 If you do Joe's Garage, you could always segue into Catholic Girls, or maybe Broken Hearts Are For A******S or even Bobby Brown...if you never want to hired back there again... Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.
