nmcq Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I can't find one small enough to just hold my MotifES rack. Preferably a bag with shoulder strap for now. And no one knows anything about a 1-space rack, they look at my like I'm from Mars. The Gator bag I have is 2-space, 3.5", the MotifES rack is 1 3/4" high, and takes up half of the 2-space bag. I have used the extra space for cords, power and midi cable but would prefer a smaller bag and putting that stuff elsewhere, like the front pocket. Hope this isn't too lame of a question, but I've been stymied on this. thx Neil myspace.com/AlteredDominant www.Prymary.com NordElectro3/S90XS/SteinwayS(midi'd)/KX88/Apple MBP, iMac/MainStage2/Scrbee/NI Komplete/ApogeeDuet/QSCplx1804/JBLmrx512/SpcStnSRX/LogicPro9/DP/ProTools
Still Learning Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 How about spending $40.00 US and protecting your ES rack and at the same time filling up that second space? Clonk Here for a Furman power conditioner When most people go to work, they work. When musicians go to work, they play. Which do you prefer?
Griffinator Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Hope this isn't too lame of a question It is. (just kidding) Seriously, no, there is no such thing as a 1-space rack. I'd go with the suggestion above - fill it with a power conditioner. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
nmcq Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 Wow, that's amazing. Especially with all the powerful 1-space units out there. But it does explain the 'huh'? I get when asking. The MotifES rack does so much so well that's all I need for easy jazz duo gigs. My objective on this is small small light easy. I have a 2-space rack bag (half full) and I have a power conditioner, but I want small and transportable. Maybe I should go into the 1-space rack biz. Or not. Anyone with 1-space rack ideas or alternate sources? thx Neil myspace.com/AlteredDominant www.Prymary.com NordElectro3/S90XS/SteinwayS(midi'd)/KX88/Apple MBP, iMac/MainStage2/Scrbee/NI Komplete/ApogeeDuet/QSCplx1804/JBLmrx512/SpcStnSRX/LogicPro9/DP/ProTools
eric Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I'd say figure out a way to roll your own! Or get one custom made. A tiny Anvil-style case built to the dimensions of the rack you mentioned should not be too pricey or heavy. How about adapting a laptop bag?
bloodyMary Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 There was a thread about someone who put his single-space trinity rack into some kind of laptop bag, it turned out great. If I were you, i'd carry a module in a padded bag. It's about the size of a laptop, isn't it? Stage: MOX6, V-machine, and Roland AX7 Rolls PM351 for IEMs. Home/recording: Roland FP4, a few guitars
nmcq Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 It's about 150% the width of my G4, so it's too big for a laptop bag. Ideally it would be a zip open/zip closed front and back like my Gator 2-space bag, but evidently that's not a possibility. Thanks though. Griffinator Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 You could swipe a pizza driver's bag. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
The Real MC Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Is there much use for a one space rack? Is there much use for a one ounce drinking glass? Is there much use for a handgun with a one bullet cylinder? Is there much use for a woman with one... never mind.
Jim Alfredson Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I have the same problem with the same Motif ES Rack. I like to set the Motif on top of my Hammond XK3 / XK System so I can adjust it's volume and scroll through patches not programmed into the presets of the XK3, so a big, hulking rack case is a no-no. The pizza bag idea is a good one. Build a 1-space rack into it. Our drummer in Root Doctor uses a pizza bag for his cymbals. Keep it greazy! B3tles - Soul Jazz THEO - Prog Rock
MusicWorkz Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 if you don't want to use the second space, buy a 2-space case and put the Motif in holes 2 and 3 instead of holes 1 and 2. Or buy a rackmount mixer or power strip and be really cool ... Yamaha (Motif XS7, Motif 6, TX81Z), Korg (R3, Triton-R), Roland (XP-30, D-50, Juno 6, P-330). mikeNZ1 Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 It is not often I get one over on you guys.... Proel makes a 1U rack flightcase http://www.proelgroup.com/proel/en/stageequipment/catalog.jsp?id_cat=11196244995510 If you hunt around enough you might find other makers too, but the 1U is a rare beast indeed. FWIW, I think a 2U case or bag is preferable - it is not much larger, but can fit a whole lot of cables and stuff. There is also more choice, so you get lower prices. Michael
Byrdman Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 That looks likes it a flight case rather than a rack. How come its not available with casters?
mikeNZ1 Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 >>>How come its not available with casters? Because then it would be a 1U skateboard...

Sven Golly Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 At some point, concessions should be made regarding the amount of time & effort expended vs. the relative benefits of finding this white whale. Is it really that big a deal for the 1.75" of extra height that a 2U rack (which is already in your possession) inflicts upon your daily routine? Just my $0.02, of course...

I seems like a 1U rack would make things a bit tight. Don't know about you, but 1 3/4" is really small for me to get my hands in there for any connections I might have to replace on the fly. much easier to get into a 3 1/2" area. Plus, having the extra space can help with ventilation. I'm sure the Motif rack doesn't produce too much heat, but it's better to have some room for it to breathe. I can't imagine what he'd do if he had to schlep around a B3 and a Leslie.... Buy a Nord Stage, of course :-) Seriously, I do still cart around a B3 and a leslie, and a Mark V, and a Clav, and a Moog, depending on the band and the concert venue or recording client. Technology has come so far, though, that for some smaller in-and-out jobs I enjoy getting my rig down to the minimum basics, *so long as the sounds are still top-quality*. IMO Nord Stage and MotifES qualify here, which is why I own a Compact and a Rack version, respectively. Others do not. Clearly by the excellent information in this thread, it's far easier and more time-efficient to just keep using the 2-space rack for jazz and other weighted-key-only gigs, put a cover on the top space, the MotifES on the bottom space, and use the top blank space for cords, power, midi cables. I just wanted to check to see if there was a world of 1-space racks out there I wasn't aware of, obviously not. Thanks for the info and comments. Griffinator Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Neil, I wasn't trying to bust balls too hard there. Basically, there's a critical mass in racks, where it's just not cost effective or desirable to manufacture something with that little space - the difference in price between a 1U and a 2U would be, well, nill.... Hey man, bustage neither perceived nor taken, but thanks anyway. A 2U vs a 1U rack is nowhere NEAR an important issue compared to other things I need to think about (like playing Anthropology at 220 {:-O ), I just wanted to do a quick fact-check, which was accomplished thanks to this great group. thx Neil myspace.com/AlteredDominant myspace.com/AlteredDominant www.Prymary.com NordElectro3/S90XS/SteinwayS(midi'd)/KX88/Apple MBP, iMac/MainStage2/Scrbee/NI Komplete/ApogeeDuet/QSCplx1804/JBLmrx512/SpcStnSRX/LogicPro9/DP/ProTools
