ProfD Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 A ROMpler does a great job but it is hard to beat the real thing. Recently, I was reminded of it while listening to a jazz pianist, B3 organ trio and another group using a real Rhodes. In all cases, once set up and ready to go those instruments had a fullness of sound and cut through perfectly. The results Ive heard with ROMplers have been mixed. Regardless of manufacturer, even with a great sound system, the thinness of sound and/or anomalies in the samples has been obvious. Im still in the camp who believes a ROMpler covers the bases well. Beyond the samples, the most critical aspect of making it sound great lies in proper amplification. It is OK to skimp on the size and weight of a ROMpler, DP or synth, scary cables, outboard accessories, etc. But, please do yourself a favor by investing in the best sound system possible as amplified in many amp threads around here. It is sad to hear KB(s) costing several thousand dollars being played and/or mixed through an inferior sound system reducing it to a cut above an Ensoniq Mirage (unless that is the desired effect). timwat Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 +1 This forum reminded me of this with its recurring streams of "Friends don't let friends play through Roland KC amps." At the end of the day, all I offer an audience is my sound. So I might as well try to load for bear. ..
