Bluesape Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 DAMN!!!! Love that man! Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Sometimes never!
Caevan O'Shite Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Wow, 71 seems a tad young... Well, at least he had a really good long full run of it! Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do? ~ Caevan James-Michael Miller-O'Shite ~ _ ___ _ Leprechaun, Esquire _ ___ _
picker Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 According to some folks who met him, his playing was a lot better than his personality. I guess he was another example of a brilliant guitarist who was pretty much a jerk otherwise. I'm glad he had a long life and played all the great music he did. Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.
fantasticsound Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Noooooooooooooooooooo =( RIP Jerry.. =( My reaction exactly! 71... My dad is 71 and healthy (God bless...) but I think he's led quite a bit "cleaner" life than Jerry likely did. RIP Jerry. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd
Gifthorse Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 That stinks, what a badass. http://flagshipmile.dmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/gifthorse
d halfnote Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Well, nobody's on the permanent reserve list but, yeah, a drag. Very good player in many ways. d=halfnote
caprae Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Emphysema - sounds like a life of smoking took him down. What a bummer. He might not have had the personality, but he definitely had the heavies hanging with him. ...just knock em in the head with a stump. Raise your children and spoil your grandchildren. Spoil your children and raise your grandchildren.
Strategery Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 WOW....really caught me off guard today to learn this. I got to meet him backstage many years back at a concert. He was a rounder. Sad to see him go. He was a great picker for those that didn't know. Randy "Just play!"
Mortal Engines Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Thanks for posting the YouTube videos....I knew he was involved with country music but never knew much about him beyond the Burt Reynolds movies of the 70s. www.myspace.com/mortal_engines
Eric Iverson Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I saw Chet Atkins and Jerry together at the (late, lamented) Bottom Line in the Village a number of years ago.. one of the best concerts I ever saw. More for Chet, than Jerry, who seemed a little subdued that night... I thought at the time, "great guitar player, but a little out of practice." I know of the "Me and Chet" and "Me and Jerry" albums... what albums out there really reflect Jerry's best as a guitar player?... I really don't want to hear "When You're Hot, You're Hot" or "Amos Moses" again! Eric Johnson's instructional video features him doing some Jerry Reed stuff, which is what whet my appetite. But I never bought any of his records.
Jode Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 A fantastic guitar picker, a writer of uniquely warped songs, and an actor who, as the Snowman in Smokey And The Bandit, was one of my greatest childhood heroes, has left us. I've heard he could be a jerk, but that wasn't my experience when I met him. His merch guys were selling 8x10s for signing. I was too broke to buy one - I could only go to the show because it was a freebie at a casino. I rifled through my wallet for something to get signed. When I got to the front of the line, I greeted him with my favorite line of Snowman's dialogue - "Hoss, you ain't gonna b'lieve this, but that crazy sumbitch just tried to drive right up under my truck" - and he threw his head back and laughed. I meekly explained that all I had for an autograph was the receipt I'd gotten from Bellsouth that afternoon when I paid them to turn the phone back on. He chuckled and said, "Hell, son, don't worry - been there myself." Bow your heads, gentlemen. A great man has passed. Story here. "I had to have something, and it wasn't there. I couldn't go down the street and buy it, so I built it." Les Paul
fantasticsound Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 If you're looking for a great Jerry Reed tune you need go no further than The Claw. But truth be told (and I liked Jerry a lot) I prefer Clint Black's take on it off the Taylor Guitars' Sounds of Wood & Steel cd. Not as fast but very tasty! It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Strategery Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Notice all the Peavey amps in that Amos Moses video. Also, all the rockers started wearing his style of cowboy hat. Ol' Jerry must've been way ahead of his time. Randy "Just play!"
Mortal Engines Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Yeah....I remember Ministry's Alain Jourgenson wearing a hat JUST like his....thanks for posting the links Mr Stamplicker...Amos Moses freaking killed me.
picker Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Bow your heads, gentlemen. A great man has passed. I am so glad to hear that he could be a nice guy. I'd hat to think someone that talented was never nice to strangers. Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.
Bytored Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I loved Jerry Reed. At a loss for words. RIP Jerry. What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it gives forth a sound It's got wires that vibrate, and give music What can this thing be that I found?
Shoes Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Ya shit.. I saw this in the paper this morning. I knew him more for his celebrity and acting than his playing and only caught wind of how well he could play when somebody here kicked me a while back. He was one of a kind. Comedic, confidant and always entertaining. A man of many talents who seemed to understand that gifts were meant for giving and his smile and laughter always let you know he loved every minute of it. I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.
Billster Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 She got the Goldmine and I got the Shaft He ought to get some kind of award just for that. Everything else is icing on the cake. Buy my CD on CD Baby! Bill Hartzell - the website MySpace?!?!
skipclone 1 Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Dang, I respected so much of that man`s work-great songs, no slouch on the silver screen and a great player as well. I still get spells of `Amos Moses` stuck in my eardrums. Yessir, my hat stays on the table today. Same old surprises, brand new cliches- Skipsounds on Soundclick: www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandid=602491
