d halfnote Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Having spent most of the last few weeks offline I wondered what anyone had thought of the closing of the Olympics, Jimmy Page & all. Imaging my consternation when I found no commentary here! FWIW, I'm stumped how the chose him over such MOR candydates as Sirs Paul or the eternally popular Elton. More to the point , esp. considering the setting, how'd they pass over Pete Townshend playing "Magic Bus" ?! d=halfnote
miroslav Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Well...that's what you get for being offline... If you had been here...you could have started a thread about it. I only caught a small piece of the closing ceremony (no Page)...and what I caught, was somewhat of a yaaaaaawn.... Just too much new-age glitz IMO. Did Page rock it out a bit? miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
d halfnote Posted September 1, 2008 Author Posted September 1, 2008 Rock out? Well, sorta. Like most modern TV it was pre-recorded but JP did a better job of syncing than his co-star, Leona Lewis (slthough I quite liked her vocals)). A London double-decker drove on, some 21stC./Clockwork MandarinOrange clogging took place, then "Whole Lotta Gloves" was demonstrated. Here's one view (the "fun" starts about 3:20: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpkzZFg9Yfg As above, I gotta wonder: Why Page? Why that song? More than anything else, Why not Pete & Roger doing 'Magic Bus' ?... though, given the cirmcumstances, I suppose it might've been Pete & Amy Winehouse doing "They Tried To Make Me Take The Magic Bus To Rehab"...(hmm, have I answered my own qestion?)... d=halfnote

J J Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 As above, I gotta wonder: Why Page? I think it's because Jimmy page is English and he also looks like he's chinese at the same time! Just a thought...
d halfnote Posted September 1, 2008 Author Posted September 1, 2008 Well, it was Pete T who said, "All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes". d=halfnote
BadLife Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Jimi just looks old Well I guess he is getting along in years
Eric VB Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Maybe it was a marketing decision? That recent Zep reunion was a wee bit popular, no? Could have been a demographic thing, too. I grew up when Zep was the biggest thing and I watched the Olympics. Maybe there were more Zep fans like me watching the Olympics than the Beatles generation, or Who or Elton John fans? If it had been any of the other people mentioned I would have wondered why it wasn't Page. (Of course I would have assumed it was because Page was just being his particular self and refused to do it.) After watching it, though, I have to wonder why he did agree to do it. That gig just didn't seem like his style. In describing the show cheese is a huge understatement. [The Rolling Stones didn't meet your criteria, halfnote? ]
Eric VB Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Jimi just looks old Well I guess he is getting along in years Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) isn't exactly the picture of youth anymore, either. I feel a little bad bringing this up, but even Dick Clark -- the eternal youth -- is starting to show his age. Gotta feel for him surviving a stroke, though. Which do you like better? Old Jimmy or old Elvis?
Terrell Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 As above, I gotta wonder: Why Page? I think it's because Jimmy page is English and he also looks like he's chinese at the same time! Just a thought... Ace Freely was in rehab?
MILLO Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 As above, I gotta wonder: Why Page? I think it's because Jimmy page is English and he also looks like he's chinese at the same time! Just a thought... funny... I think Page is an extravagance... most other Brit legends are still out and about touring every once in a while, including Sir Paul. Scott Fraser Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Maybe it was a marketing decision? That's a big 10-4, buddy. The entire enterprise was one big propaganda campaign. The idea of this part of the closing ceremony was to show some sort of link with London, site of the next summer Olympics. It was a stretch, requiring some really cheesy aesthetic decisions (as with the remainder of the show,) but I guess to the Chinese organizers Jimmy Page equals swinging London. Maybe Austin Powers wasn't available. After watching it, though, I have to wonder why he did agree to do it. That gig just didn't seem like his style. Ch-ching, $$$$, yeah, $$$$, ch-ching, I really wonder, $$$$, why he agreed, $$$$$, to something like this. Ch-ching. In describing the show cheese is a huge understatement. The whole 2 weeks had an unbelievably high cheese content, IMO. Scott Fraser Scott Fraser
miroslav Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 The whole 2 weeks had an unbelievably high cheese content, IMO. I saw it coming right after the opening ceremony...China's attempt at Hollywood....or was it Broadway... miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
d halfnote Posted September 2, 2008 Author Posted September 2, 2008 [The Rolling Stones didn't meet your criteria, halfnote? ] While I'm sure Sir Mick woulda done it in a minit (he tried to get a tour of China wayyyyyback in the then...although that's a tangent here, really) & might even have been accepted by the Men In Suits, I suspect KR woulda not, on both counts. d=halfnote
Mortal Engines Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 This is really sad but, NOT ONCE did I ever turn to watch the Olympics...Funny I never really thought of Page as being an attention whore....then again, he DID do that SNL thing with Puff Daddy. Page was the guy who inspired me to pick up a guitar....a little bit of me died inside today (LOL!).
