Griffinator Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=850556&content=music Song is called "Fly On" - first on the page. This is the primary portion of a song I've been tooling with for a bit now - I was still playing guitar in this band when I wrote it - so I didn't really think much about the bassline. So over the last couple days I was screwing around with it - and I came up with this little walking thing I play under the primary riff, slipping back into lock with the guitars during the vocal passages. So the question is, does it work? Or does it stick out like a sore thumb? (And yes, I'm crossposting this on the Guitar forum, to get the alternative perspective, because we all know we're biased over here...) A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
Bottom End Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 I like your walking bassline much more than when you are just playing what the guitarist is playing. It hooks me into the song where just backing the guitars would make me think of a 1000 other hard rock songs where I'd heard it done before. Your bsassline makes me notice the song. "Call me what instrument you will, though you can fret me, yet you cannot play upon me.'-Hamlet Guitar solos last 30 seconds, the bass line lasts for the whole song.
Griffinator Posted September 1, 2008 Author Posted September 1, 2008 That's exactly what I was after, BE. It just seemed too obvious to mirror that riff - so I started thinking WWGD (What Would Geezer Do) Now I had to be a bit more simple during the chord-y parts, because I have to sing this one - and by God, I'm not Geddy Lee, I can't do wild basslines with my feet, play the synths, and sing at the same time! A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
fingertalkin Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 I liked the walking line too. It is what actually drew me into the song. How do you sign a computer screen?
jeremy c Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Don't forget the famous line uttered by Duck Dunn in the film, The Blues Brothers. Why not? If the shit fits, wear it. Free download of my cd!.
b5pilot Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Don't forget the famous line uttered by Duck Dunn in the film, The Blues Brothers. Why not? If the shit fits, wear it. I love that line! Duck Rules! Griff, I like that walking pattern too. It definately adds a little oomph to the tune. Well done! Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it. http://www.myspace.com/theeldoradosband
doc taz Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 That's perfect. This thing sounds like a stoner tune... hmm. The bass line just adds some extra psychedelic dimension. Playing the root to the guitar would've made it a bit lifeless. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page

Playing the root to the guitar would've made it a bit lifeless. There's a bit more energy in the rest of the song (about 3.5 minutes worth of instrumental gyrations) - but none of that was particularly relevant to the question, so I left it out. jar546 Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I like it and think it fits. This is a song that needs a bassline such as yours or the song would just get boring. "The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know" by Me
Switch hitter Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I think it sounds fine, definately gives the song more depth.
