MOTU 896MKIII for a keyboardist?

Hello.

I'm mostly a composer who spends most of the time in the home studio, but sometimes do a lil gig live, solo, and sometimes even call a few other musicians to play live (2 guitars, 1 bass, 3 mics). My setup is 4 keyboard synths, 3 rackmount synths, 1 drum machine. I also sing.

I currently have a Peavey FX24 mixer, plus a Korg D3200 for HD recording. I'm thinking if I could get buy with a more compact and practical solution - something that would allow me to use it both in the studio and when going live. That's why I'm considering the MOTU 896 MK3.Is this a feasable option? Are there other options? What do you suggest?Your input is more than welcome.

Unless you are planning to record at at 24/192, I personally feel the 896 is overkill for your needs (the 896 is MOTU's answer to the high sample ratee PT interfaces).

I use two 828 MkII's (one in the rack and one for live recording) and love them. I record at 24/44.1 on a Mac G4 running Digital Performer 5.13 and have no issues with sound quality or track count.

If you're sold on MOTU, you could also look into the Traveller or the Ultra-Lite. I certainly wouldn't buy anything cheaper than the MOTU stuff. Their stuff is the entry level of more serious, better quality interfaces.
A ROMpler is just a polyphonic turntable.

Having had only a MOTU MTP years ago, I'm certainly not "sold to" Motu :) But I considered the 896 Mk3 for the ability to act as a mixer with compressor and reverb available from the front pannel when operated standalone (ie. without the computer). Are there other similar alternatives with a good track count suited to my needs?

Do you also consider fit for this the RME Fireface 800 and the Mackie Onyx 1200F ? Or any other alternatives? One of my concerns is to be able to plug all my synths in a live situation without having to plug / unplug cables. So, more than track counts, inputs matter.

All the MOTU MkIII interfaces have on-board DSP (a feature I would love to have on the MKII's). The MOTU units are solid and dependable. For my money, feature for feature the MOTU units are among the best out there. If i were to consider others, Prosonus and RME are two I'd look at.

You never mentioned what computer platform you are using? My comments are definitely biased towards a MAC platform, so YMMV...

I'm using Windows XP and a dual core intel laptop.

As for playing live I play live with all my keyboards from my studio, direct to a broadcast web radio. i also invite friends and musicians and we do some live practise in my studio...very old school indeed :P on the few ocasions that I play OUTSIDE my studio, i take two keyboards with me and the DR-880 for drums. But yes...i want the whole lot plugged in at the same time :P

Just came across the newest TC Electronics Studioconnect 48. Anyone knows this machine and would it do the trick for me?
