scottasin Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 Other than the obvious reasons... I've been searching craigslist and ebay for weeks, and I haven't found one thats far enough from retail to spring for it... Whens someone gonna upgrade to a stage?
Tonysounds Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 I've upgraded 4 times to a stage....sold the Stage and kept the Electro. The Electro just has that something..... Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
David Loving Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 I sold my 73 and got a 61. Works better for me. "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."
kanker. Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 I started with an Electro Rack, and then added a 73 to the arsenal, so I guess I'm a 2 Electro family A ROMpler is just a polyphonic turntable.
Chris Link Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 Sold my 61 to get a 73. Funny how these things inspire such a loyal following. Anyone here sold an Electro because they didn't like it and replaced it with something else? aka âmisterdregsâ Nord Electro 5D 73 Yamaha P105 Kurzweil PC3LE7 Motion Sound KP200S Schimmel 6-10LE QSC CP-12 Westone AM Pro 30 IEMs Rolls PM55P
eric Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 I originally bought the 73 back in 2002, had some weird thing happen where I was replacing it with a V-Combo, but that did not last. I ended up with a 61 in 2003 and that's what I've used ever since and I'm not selling mine! I've even been on the prowl to get a second one. Just so I have it.
Joe Muscara Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 I saw one for sale once. Once. "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! Hoo hoo!" - Daffy Duck "The good news is that once you start piano you never have to worry about getting laid again. More time to practice!" - MOI
David Loving Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 I take it back, after reading Kanker's post about the rack. I had a rack once but I did sell it because after I got the 61 I never used it. "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."
Chris Link Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 How come no one ever sells their electro? I guess to ask the question is to answer it. I was lucky enough to find my 61 as a "scratch-and-dent" (nothing serious, a couple of dings on the vertical face of a few keys) plus it was "Keyboard Weekend" for an additional discount at Musician's Friend outlet store. Sold it after about three years for what I paid for it. aka âmisterdregsâ Nord Electro 5D 73 Yamaha P105 Kurzweil PC3LE7 Motion Sound KP200S Schimmel 6-10LE QSC CP-12 Westone AM Pro 30 IEMs Rolls PM55P
jsaras Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 The Electro (I have the 73) is one of those rare keyboards that you like more and more as time goes by. It sounds great, very responsive, cuts through the band, weighs hardly anything and it has just enough keys for any gig unless you're playing classical repetoire. The onboard effects always impress the guitar players, even the ones that hate anything 'digital'. The acoustic piano is passable if you download the optional Steinway and use the onboard EQ to roll off the highs and boost the bass. For some reason, it took me awhile to realize that the midrange EQ worked on the pianos and the electric pianos, but that opened up a world of flexibility. The organ simulation in the Stage is better, particulary in the higher drawbars, but it not SO much better that I want to get rid of my Electro.
bhodaway10 Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 In my area, there are people selling Electro's but you're right - they're not selling them for substantially less than retail. It's such a versatile board and one of the great things about Nord is they offer quite a bit of samples and support. I would love to add a mono piano sample to my Yamaha P250 but instead, they make the cp300 and make mine "obsolete." www.brianho.net http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/brianho www.youtube.com/brianhojazz
JeffLearman Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 Last week a used 73 sold on ebay for $1000. I was surprised, because used 61's often sell for that much or more. They're available on ebay more often than not, and the going prices are say 1400 and 1100 for 73 and 61, respectively. There's one there now for 1225 plus 60 for shipping, new out-of-box.
scottasin Posted August 31, 2008 Author Posted August 31, 2008 I'm debating getting This one ... anyone know if the keys are replaceable, and how easily it can be done if they are? I think its kind of risky to go for something lke that... but still, 850.
King Julien Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I think a big reason is that they are less popular than other boards. I like to move it, move it (except The Wurly which can be a bit temperamental and the 122 for obvious reasons)

I think its kind of risky to go for something lke that... but still, 850. Very tempting price, but does it indicate a rather careless attitude. Yeah. One cigarette burn could be one dickhead at a blues jam. Two cigarette burns means serious mileage and probably way too many drinks. Ditto for the cracked endpiece. Probably drunk. Dropped the keyboard. High mileage. Caveat emptor. aka âmisterdregsâ Nord Electro 5D 73 Yamaha P105 Kurzweil PC3LE7 Motion Sound KP200S Schimmel 6-10LE QSC CP-12 Westone AM Pro 30 IEMs Rolls PM55P
bhodaway10 Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I would try seeing how much replacement parts would cost and see if it's worth the cost. Playing w/ a key like that would drive me nuts. Plus, it seems like you're only saving around $200-300 right? www.brianho.net http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/brianho www.youtube.com/brianhojazz
scottasin Posted August 31, 2008 Author Posted August 31, 2008 more like 400... the thing that worries me, he says its working perfectly and stuff, but in the state its in, you wonder if everythings good now, but theres stuff coming loose on the inside that with enough movement and shaking, it'll be dunzo.
Chris Link Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I think a big reason is that they are less popular than other boards. Good point. Anyone have access to any data on units shipped for various KB makes and models? (It's in the Wall Street Journal periodically for automobiles, e.g.) I suspect, though, that there is a higher than average buyer loyalty just from the comments here and elsewhere- no data to back that up, just an impression and anecdotes. Typically, people are by nature defensive about an expensive purchase they have made, but are also pretty quick to trash a product that they bought that didn't live up to expectations (to warn others and "get even", I suppose). Of course, if I really understood this stuff, I'd be making a seven-figure salary as a marketing genius. aka âmisterdregsâ Nord Electro 5D 73 Yamaha P105 Kurzweil PC3LE7 Motion Sound KP200S Schimmel 6-10LE QSC CP-12 Westone AM Pro 30 IEMs Rolls PM55P
David Loving Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Back when I smoked I left cigarette burns all over my Baldwin Acrosonic spinet, God bless it. It still played OK. Looks like the player, Hoagy Carmichael-esque, just left his smoke resting on the keys and forgot about it. Ahh yes, happened to me in another life. "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."
Legatoboy Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Can the Electro save MIDI program change and bank numbers per patch or is it all on the fly based on the patch number only effecting the changes on the receiving unit? MikeT156 Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Personally, I wouldn't buy any KB like the one on Ebay that the OP posted a link too. Careless owner. I never put cigarettes anywhere near my equipment even when I did smoke, eons ago. Some of the guys in my band back in the seventies thought my Hammond was their kitchen table and TRIED to put things on it, including lit cigarettes. All of which were stomped on by yours truly. I would shop around for a new Electro rather than a used one from a dubious source. You should be able to get one below MAP price if you hunt a little. Mike T. Calumet Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Check music123.com. They are having a back to school sale. Nord Electro 2 61 for $200 off. Ends up being $1,149 brand new. My band Thousand Houses: www.thousandhouses.com
Magpel Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Ha, I gotta say, keys are my third instrument and more a compositional tool than anything else, but, damn, every time I see someone play live with an Electro I am inevitably impressed with how present they sound, how naturally they mix with other rock band instruments. You listen to the online demos, and they're nothing to wow you like an Ivory grand or a Scarbee Rhodes, or even the NI B4, but they just seem so ideally optimized for live conditions. The darker corollary is how inevitably disappointed I am by the live sound of the Fantoms, Motifs and Tritons; even in the hands of good players, they never seem to integrate as organically in a mix as the Nord. In one case in particular, there's a rootsy organ&rhodes-type player I have heard many times and played with a couple, always on various Korg staple boards. The he went Nord, and I swear it was like hearing the guy for the first time. Something about that Electro, man. I do covet one. Check out the Sweet Clementines CD at bandcamp
eric Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 I gotta agree with the last comment about how great the Electro sounds live. My band has been doing some multi track digital board tapes and working on videos. Our guitar player, a teacher who was "off" this summer, spent a lot of time mixing down a bunch of our tracks and we've been listening to them. My S90 sounds accurate, but sits weird in the mix. Hard to classify, but it is kind of bright and thin in many places. This is making me re-evaluate my sound choices and programming. The Electro, on the other hand, comes growling out of the mix like a thick slab of southern-fried goodness. It simply rocks!
Legatoboy Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 I have some reservations about the pianos but I have read if you download the Steinway sample it ain't bad. How are the acoustic pianos. I know the Wurly, Rhodes and Clav are pretty good and the organ goes without saying. But that action too, it seems a bit light for piano. I know it was a compromise and all! lb CP-50, YC 73, FP-80, PX5-S, NE-5d61, Kurzweil SP6, XK-3, CX-3, Hammond XK-3, Yamaha YUX Upright, '66 B3/Leslie 145/122

I'm SO on the fence with the NS76 and now perhaps the Electro 73. Everytime I play these two boards in the GC I come away with a very underwhelming feeling of....what's the big deal? I really don't get it. Maybe it is the overall sound and functionality that comes across better in an ensemble than me sitting there playing the thing in the GC. I guess you don't know for sure till ya' try one out in the heat of battle. The NE I don't think would work for me has a one board stand alone simply because, being primarily a pianist, I need that weighted action even if it's that less than desirable Fatar action they put on the Stage. Eric's comment regarding the S90 is kinda what I'm hearing these days has well when I'm playing in the louder volume contexts. I think I just need something new and different maybe...tired of the same old..... https://soundcloud.com/dave-ferris https://www.youtube.com/@daveferris2709 2005 NY Steinway D Yamaha AvantGrand N3X, CP88, P515

I use it at their rehearsal space, where it's already set up and is owned by the band leader. I don't get it either. It works fine for the rehearsals but I would never want one. John
