i look at craigslist every day for bargains (or junk ;) )

and i keep seeing old clonewheels go for a lot of money.

seriously, another $300 would get me a brand new nord.

old gear is worth what the market will bear i suppose, personally i wouldn't pay more than 30% of what it cost new

I say 50% if it's in great condition, and not very old.

For lets say, Yamaha DX7, noone will pay more thn 10% of it's MSRP :)

Stage: MOX6, V-machine, and Roland AX7

Rolls PM351 for IEMs.

Home/recording: Roland FP4, a few guitars

Just an example, dude. I see used gear prices vary a great deal. There's a local internet ad board I watch con the time, and often there's stuff like analog rolands (the cool jx with programmer) for $500, and then there's crap like old romplers, something like roland xp for $2k.

The VK-8 is a current model, according to Roland. Some would say it's no more obsolete than the (modern) Korg CX-3. I can't say I understand what Roland is doing with the product though. In some regards, it does seem like it no longer ships and Roland does not care. Sell it or don't, dudes.

What would you guys say is a good price for an old clonewheel, such as a VK-7? What would you pay for it?

What the market will bear i.e. hype and nostalgia are the main reasons folks can unload old gear at ridiculous prices.

The true value of an old piece of gear really comes down to its significance in your music.

Some clones are better than others, too. I've never liked the Roland VKs, but love my modern CX-3. This often doesn't seem to enter into the price as well, unless perhaps, the used clone says "Hammond" on it.

I paid $700 for my VK-7 a month ago. I put an ad up on Craigslist asking if anyone was selling their clonewheel. The guy I purchased from had a Korg CX-3 and was probably going to buy a Nord Electro 2.

I went into my local music store last week to get some replacement cables, and they had a brand new VK-8 in the store, at the same price listed by MF. They just had it leaning against a wall like it was used, instead of set up for demo. I thought it was a VK-7 until i saw the buttons for the non-clonewheel sounds.

Some buyers don't think they should take a loss on equipment they bought and now want to sell. Generally, things that are less than one year old in like-new condition will bring in the most $$ on the used market. Old Clonewheels? I think I'd pass completely. The newer clonewheels are a lot better than the early versions, and the prices aren't real high to get something that sounds great.
