I just got a look at the Squier Vintage Modified Strats on Musician's Friend, and they are looking pretty good for $299. They are selling one with a sunburst finish, black pickguard, and white knobs & pickup covers. That and black with black guard and white knobs/covers are my favorite strat color schemes. And the pickups are Duncan designed, which I have had really good luck with in every guitar I've come across with them.

Man, I just gotta get some money together, GAS is building...

Not bad, Picker.

This is the Squire I've always liked (almost got one a couple of years ago). Love the P90's...the pickguard...and the separate tone/Volume controls:

Anyone ever play one? I'm wondering how the PU's sound and the overall feel of the body/neck...?

$229...that's pretty inexpensive!

I used to own one, even that color. It played nice, but the P90's didn't have the same bark the old Gibsons had. It still had a very Tele-ish vibe to it. The switches and pots were pretty cheesy. With a hotter set of P90's and some better electronic parts, it would have been pretty neat. I didn't keep it long, but I wish I still had it. It would have been a pretty cool project guitar.

M - You are one weird Cat IMO! Minimalist-retro = Minimaltro.

IMO - This guitar has the worst part of Fender mixed with the worst part of a Gibson.

Hey...sometimes "fuggly" can be beatifull (just consider many of the metal/emo bands out there ;) )

I guess I like it 'cuz it's certainly different from the usual Tele-fare...but it does have a certain ballsy quality to it...and I really think the P90's suit the overall vibe.

Now...AFA the actual sound/build quality...Picker kinda' gave us the hands-on view, and based on his impression, I doubt I would ever get one....even for the crazy $229 price!!!

The one other Fender Tele that I really want to get...is their limited edition Palo Escrito...on which I almost pulled the trigger last winter...but was too wrapped up with my Hagstrom purchases. :)

I may still get one eventually if I can find one with a really sweet wood grain pattern and deeper, darker color...though they are not readily available anymore:

Dead sexy. Almost looks like the rosewood George Harrison Tele, but with even more beautiful grain. What a piece!

Sorry dude...

Gibson Cons for me - I was talking about the 4 knobs that are impossible to get to while mid lick and the 3 position toggle switch that's never really "positive"...

Fender Cons - Headstock with non tilt, string trees, nasty butt joint for the neck, etc.

As far as looks go... I like guitars that look functional with high quality materials that are raw or shine through.

Eh...I'm not much of a knob/toggle twiddler during play.

I kinda' like to set-n-forget my tone/volume knobs...per song.

But I get what you are saying...for live play...it may be awkward.

I picked mine up for $125 used at a local store, and that seemed pretty cool to me. I figured the amp at the store didn't have the guts it needed to make the thing snarl like a P90 should. But it pretty much did the same thing in every amp I tried it in, and I didn't have the money to get replacement p/ups, so I traded it for something, don't remember what. I do kinda wish I had it back. I kinda have an itch for a Tele right now, and no money to scratch it with.

ah, the things we wish we could do over...

I've played a few - great necks, and an acceptable P90 tone for the price. I wish Fender would release a MIA Fender version, with the right guts.

Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Sometimes never!
