Soloing over Smokin in the Boys Room

My bands new guitar player is all about everyone being involved and getting a few spotlight moments throughout the show. He basically said if you ever feel like going for a solo....go for it.

So today, I get an email with an idea from him about me taking one of the solos from "Smokin in the Boys Room".

My question is should I try to emulate the harmonica or just jazz up the bassline with some more blues stuff or what? I have never had to come up with a solo before.

Hmm, if it were me I would probably jazz up the bassline. It's a walking pattern so there's plenty of room to have some fun and keep the song flowing.

Oh and by the way, I'm guilty, I like Nickelback. I guess I better stay away from Iranian garbagemen.

Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it.

Don't take my signature personal, it is a quote from an ad for a bassplayer on that thread titled "hilarious advertisement that I saw" or something like that. It was one of Phils' posts. I found it to be absolutely hilarious. I have to watch my back too!

I have come up with something simple, yet effective....I think.

I like the idea of playing something like the harmonic solo.

Harmonicas have a limited number of notes, pretty much the notes in a blues scale. That's a great place to start when trying to come up with a solo.

Basically, I am going to solo where the harmonica solo is, then he will take his solo, then I get two bars, he gets two bars and we come back together.

I am going to walk into that solo then play a G7 arppegio into the D7. Do some little fill, repeat into the A and hammer some 16ths into his solo. After his solo, I will steal the riff from " I Got You" starting on the G down to the D for the rest of the solo and come back together......

Does that make sense! That is how I notate music :)
