About 20 years ago... and then he was gone... (poof)

Recently I've seen his name again in some ads but that's about it. Excellent technician but I was not a fan of the music I heard back then.

It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman

Yes, I have Mobo Club.

I also have a live concert video from the mid 80s where he is playing in a trio with Bill Bruford and Jeff Berlin.

He has an interesting approach to Fusion from the Japanese perspective. He's never made my jaw drop like a Holdsworth or Henderson, but if he came to this town, I'd probably go.

I've been on a Watanabe kick lately. I have several albums and tapes from the late 80's that I dumped into my computer to burn CD's.

He brings a funk aspect to the fusion stuff, a little like some of Scofield's funkier offerings. Also some experimental vibe.

Yeah, his tone is a little weird sometimes. I know he used Steinberger guitars for a while, and the 80's was when rack gear was going to solve all tone questions.

Really good stuff.

THAT Fn! JAMZ! Gotd-ham dudes! I love the beginning. I tink I'm a Wantanabe Wantabe now... At least I want his band! That Bass player smokes! I don't really like Watanabes distorted lead work or tone or technique, but that riff is awesome. Then, when they take it low... Holy Snippies! That bass player is talking right to me!

Did you see how tiny Watanabe's hands are? It's amazing that he can reach the low E.

Bona is an inspiration.

I like the Mobo records Kazumi Watanabe did. Though especially worth checking out is a Japanese quartet featuring KW called Resonance Vox who made a CD in 1993. Very sweet!

Stern is a neat player. Check out 'Who Let the Cats Out?'. His quartet with Bona, Chambers and Bob Francheschini is one of the best live bands around now. Check out the DVD Live in Paris. Any criticism of Stern just dates back to the time he annoyed all the jazz critics by playing what Miles payed him to back in the 80s.

Yeah, that's a great show. The bonus features on the disc are great too, an older track with Bob Berg on sax, and some good interviews, where Mike impersonates Miles' voice.

Ever notice how anyone that ever quotes Miles has to do it in the "Miles Voice"? :D
