Software samplers?

Hi everyone,

lately I've been thinking about getting into sampling for studio use. I want to build some libraries of my own, with sounds I recorded on my own. However, before spending too much of money on a software sampler (I saw them going at around 300) and then finding out I'm not patient/interested/ambitious enough to do it over a long time period, I'd like to get an idea of it. Does anyone know if there is a freeware sampler or a useful demo of a software sampler? I'm running Logic Studio 8 on a MacBook.

Thanks in advance

Why not use the built-in sampler in Logic Studio 8? It's called the EXS.

Are you sure? Have you used it? I always thought of EXS being the "engine" hosting the numerous MIDI-Instruments that come with installing Logic, GarageBand and the Jam Packs.

Maybe I should actually read the funky manual?

Well, I can't say I've done it, but I recently got a free sound from someone and played around with it. I'm 95% sure all the bits you need are in there. RTFM is probably what you (and I, for that matter) need to do. :thu:

The google is your friend. My search yielded:

Updated for Logic 8.

Basically, some of these tips include:

- While EXS24 isn't as robust a soft sampler as some of the most current out there, it's so tightly integrated with Logic 8 that it's still the straightest line between A and B.

- If you already have a host of "other-format" samples, use Chicken Systems Translator to convert them into EXS24 format.

- EXS24 automatically converts Akai and Soundfonts on its own

- Autosampler by Redmatica will handle a lot of the heavy lifting of sampling your hardware synths if that's what you want to do.

Well, I'm not sure ANY of them do what you want, as most software samplers are technically sample playback engines, but as your samples are already recorded, you may do OK with the given tweakability in EXS, Mach Five, Kontakt, etc.

Gigasampler is on the way out and Structure is ProTools HD-only (maybe RTAS as well?). HALion is still around but fading in popularity. E-Mu may release Mac versions of Emulator and Proteus, and probably have the most advanced mangling features. Mach Five from MOTU probably comes next. But Kontakt, especially with its advanced scripting, seems to be the new standard.

You just missed a few summer promotionals on some of those products, but sales are down and new sales seem to start up a week after an expired sale ends.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I've settled with Logic's EXS24 which does pretty much everything I need. I've already built myself a melodica patch... way funny! :thu:
