Chad Thorne Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Many of you know that because of an injury to my left (plucking) hand, I don't have quite all the sensation in those fingertips. I can play bass, even though it's more difficult to fingerpick a guitar, because the strings are bigger (easier to feel) and further apart. More space between strings = fewer mistakenly struck strings. You may also remember that recently I got a 5-string bass. Mmm, closer strings. LOTS of clams getting used to that, and a reinforcement of the lesson that a bass player can get away with a few clams as long as the bass goes "thump" at the right time, i.e., as long as I don't drop the groove! Just this week, though, I've broken through to a place where I'm hitting almost everything pretty cleanly. Suddenly practicing is less grind and more joy again! Plus I've finally got my Dean Edge 5-string dialed in to where it yields pretty good Jazz Bass tones. (Others have commented on this, too.) So this week I'm happy with where my playing is at. Just wanted to share.

Tom Capasso Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 It's funny how one day you realize things have fallen into place. When I was moving to 5, I hit plenty of clams for a bit. Then one day I realized I had the music covered, and my hands knew where they were going. Glad to hear the work has paid off for you! moot Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Good job Chad! It kinda happened the same way for me. One gig I was struggling and sucking mightily and then, all of a sudden I just "got it". "He is to music what Stevie Wonder is to photography." getz76 I have nothing nice to say so . . .

Mr. Bizarro Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Great to hear that you're satisfied. Now that you have that down, it's time to get a 6. Here's a tip: Try to eat everything. You'd be surprised how much is edible.
