buttonbashers Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Looking back at all the bands that have been.. the best all appear from overseas. Bands like the rolling stones, beatles, oasis and kinks kick the asses of all our american bands.. I just wish we had some better "rock stars" than elvis or elton john. actually come to think of it... Elton John is even a brit!!

kanker. Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Oasis? Really?Hahahaha. Perfect A ROMpler is just a polyphonic turntable.
Dave Horne Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 The Doors .... No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message. In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.
Tonysounds Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 They are? Oasis? REALLY? Dont tell that to Jimi Hendrix, Crosby Stills Nash (*and Canadian Young, even though Nash is British), Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Santana, The Ramones, Talking Heads, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty/CCR, The Cars, The Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, The Black Crowes, The Eagles, Joe Walsh, Van Halen, Nirvana, Nilsson, Randy Newman, Grand Funk, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams (yeah, he was a rock star!), Chuck Berry, Richie Valens, Buddy Holly, Kiss..just to name a few, and I mean A FEW. Dave Horne Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 There's nothing like a little nationalism to stir things up. No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message. In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.
Legatoboy Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Buttonbashers, I don't agree with your perception actually. I used to possibly at one time as a kid but not now. The Brits don't swing the same way as us yanks do. I believe we are a bit sexier in the groove IMHO and looser! Don't get me wrong, like my dad says, when the Brits do something well they do it very well! But remember it's rock and 'ROLL'! And personally in terms of rhythemic music I think American music is some of the best the world has to offer. We might not have been the most lyrical though the past 40 years in terms of writing though! But the groove, forget about tit - we rule! Just my take on this, I have considered it myself personally! I think Ian Anderson considered FZ the only true american 'artist' but musically, I really do think we are down line from most of Europe and England! We swing hard over here and rock too, that's why they got inspired in the 1st place! lb CP-50, YC 73, FP-80, PX5-S, NE-5d61, Kurzweil SP6, XK-3, CX-3, Hammond XK-3, Yamaha YUX Upright, '66 B3/Leslie 145/122

Tonysounds Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I like that Noel Gallagher at least has perspective on his place in the scheme of things: I saw he rated his band amongst the greatest as follows: #1 The Beatles #2 The Rolling Stones #3 Oasis #4 The Who HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHALMFAOHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAAAAAA! Gary75 Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Speaking as a Brit of 33 years, I can honestly say, British music of the last 15 years is the biggest pile of dog s*** I ever happen to stray onto whilst channel hopping. We have Jamie Cullum, lorded as a fantastic jazz pianist, who has broken mainstream. Now you compare him to Harry Connick Jnr at the same age, well, there isn't is there. Am I the only Brit who dare say they can't stick the Beatles and wonder what the fuss was about. If I want to go and see a purple haired pensioner do a gig, there's an old folks home down the road has one on every Friday afternoon, between cake and snooze. Oasis are a crimewave that has not been halted sadly, it all stems from the Britpop of the early mid nineties when the ability to play 3 chords was all the ability needed. You have to ask yourself what the Beatles would have been without George Martin and his arrangement and theory. America has the best funk/jazz/soul/R&B/

SK Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 The UK's British rock is better than our British rock. CD: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/stevekessler
Gary75 Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Joe you registered in 2005 and that was your 2005th post, is that a sign?
ProfD Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I think most of us can appreciate good music regardless of who and/or where it was created. However, one of the greatest American exports has been blues, gospel and jazz which gave birth to swing, funk, soul, rock, reggae and everything good about music. Garrafon Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Other "good" questions: After eating, do amphibians have to wait one hour before getting out of the water? Are part-time band leaders semi-conductors? After they make Styrofoam, what do they ship it in? Since Americans throw rice at weddings, do Asians throw hamburgers? Since there is a speed of light and a speed of sound, is there a speed of smell? Are there any unguided missiles? Can a stupid person be a smart-ass? Before they invented drawing boards, what did they go back to? Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery? Do people in Australia call the rest of the world 'up over'? Do pilots take crash-courses? Do Roman paramedics refer to IV's as "4's"? Do pilots take crash-courses? Do Roman paramedics refer to IV's as "4's"? Do vegetarians eat animal crackers? Have you ever wondered? How can someone "draw a blank"? And, of course, why is British music better than American? I could go on.....
