Sticky Thread at last

In a few minutes, I'll be posting a sticky thread.

It's the thread that people have been asking about for years. I'm sorry it took so long, and glad to have this available.

The thread will be closed (only mods can open and post on it).

Please use this thread to make comments and suggestions (or PM any of us individually). :D

As of now, I'm asking that we stop bumping threads that have been bumped over the years (because there was no easy way to find it). If you have something to add to a thread, by all means do so.

I have seen a few other forums where all the "important" threads are sticky. I find it less appealing when I have to scroll to the next page to get past all of the stickies. Because of that, we are not making some threads sticky that might be (like the Introduce Yourself thread). New folks can find the links to these threads in the "main" sticky thread.

The other mods have helped in reading and/or editing this (as has Max Sidman from Music Player). I'm just doing the posting...

Thanks!

Tom

I just read through it, nice work Mr. C (and the other mods). In regards to the search engine, what about including the google method . On google (or any search engine of your choosing) interweb users can string together a few words that can redirect them to the specific thread they're looking for, i.e. 'musicplayer forum, Geddy Lee' (ok, not the best example  )

Yes, neat work on the sticky. I did like the lack of stickies but the time had come. Let's keep it to one.

I'll stop bumping, I promise and just bookmark old threads for myself or reference them in new threads. We have to all work to keep the quality of the forum high though. It's had it's highs and lows but it's always remained useful with enough sense of community to keep it's identity and protocol.

Great job mods.

rizzo, I use google site search too, but it only usually seems to pull up the most recent results.

Yes Phil - that "bump" thing was for you (but not just you).

Referencing other threads where appropriate is excellent.

The "Essential Threads" thread has not been abused or "over-posted", so you can judiciously add to it. It's still public.

Thanks

Tom

When you say this.. is there any way of actually bookmarking the topics from within the forum's engine? Or do you simply, say, create a folder in your web browser and bookmark each subject as a new page?... I think I' ll stick to this, whichever way is best to do so... :) Even tho I've done no bump yet :)

Thank you Tom great work.

Part of what I missed about the old forum layout was that the search engine was good and there was also a list of recently viewed topics. So you could look and see what other people had been reading after they had been searching. This would often lead to very informative reading and made the forum more like a library. Different subjects would prompt me to try different searches. I could literally surf the site.

That was part of the reason for creating the Essential Threads.

Phil, the human search engine, has taken it to another level. I'm still working through some of the threads he's linked to there, many of them were written before I arrived here. No doubt others may add to them now feeling that the info will be useful to newbies, and not lost amongst pages of bumps.

Just bookmarking with the browser. But I will be significantly adding to the Essentials soon after some significant research into the mists of time.

After a recent chat with a long-time member, I thought I'd come back here and point out the "Welcome to the Low Down !!" thread might be considered a resource for all of us.

For example, there is a link to the "essential threads" thread in there. The "Introduce Yourself", and lots of other "standard" threads have links in that thread.

If anyone has any other useful stuff they'd like me to include, I can do that.

The thread's first job is to welcome and instruct new folks, but it can serve all of us - since I'm trying to limit the number of stickies!

Thanks

Tom

Great work, mods. You guys make it a fun place to be.

One thing that might be worth considering on the 'essential threads' might be some kind of grouping structure, like gear threads, technique threads, theory threads, polls, etc. It might be useful when someone is looking for something specific so they don't have to look through 30 threads to find what they want.

Another thing that has been talked about before is a place for the 'what [piece of gear] should I buy' threads. The general consensus I see from people here is that it gets very redundant to see the same questions over and over. You could do it as a 'gear 101' type of thread, or an FAQ thread.

Thanks,

I believe there was a supplimental LDL website one of the forum members was working on some time ago that was essentially for this purpose. I don't know if anything ever happened with it.

Tom, I got it...thanks... :deadhorse:;)
