I'll give you this...

It still sounds great! You play the Satch/Vai style very well. I never expected to hear an SE sound that good... and I liked 'em. ;)

So what happened after 1998? Do you make a living through music or have you kept this strictly a hobby. Seems to me you could have a great future in commercial music if you still write and play like that.

:thu:

(BTW - There's a thread for posting your own music that's a sticky at the top of the forum content page. ;) )

The sound on the BOSS SE70 is all down to the EQ in it and the delay (almost like reverb) and the compression setting is vital get it just right and it smoothes out the overdrive. I also roll the guitar tone down and ride the guitar volume.

So what happened after 1998......lots Iv,e been involved mainly with commercial music (recording, touring, writing and programing) as far as instrumental music goes I was offerd a deal but they wanted 25% of everything I did outside of the instrumental stuff (which at the time was a lot)..........not good. And yes I still write and play. (its only 10 years !!!)

If you see a secondhand SE70 get it I have two and they are always good for something in a guitar rig or studio (not just guitar sounds)

Great playing, really nice, smooth tone (the compression is both obvious, and just-right, both in a good way), great arranging chops!

I was beginning to think, "this tune needs some teeth or attitude or somethin'", when the lead solo-work comes in and grabs and holds your attention; it doesn't necessarily add any toothy fangs or attitude, so much as it' suddenly an acrobat in the center-ring that keeps you glued...

GREAT playing, I should aspire to such chops within my own personal style...

EDIT: Hah! I was curious about your guitar, so I did a little google-search; now I know where the tune's title comes from, ;):thu: and I think I may have run across a review you posted on HC... ? :thu::cool:

Can you post a pic of your guitar or others of the same type, or put up a link to some?

Oddly enough I sold the SE-50 when it was brand new and, although I loved it for many things, decided not to buy one at the time. (Dumb!) In 1998 we had a "Superband" clinic that toured MARS Music stores here in the U.S. The band was John Patatucci on bass, Bob Mintzer on sax, Peter Erskine on drums and John Abercrombie on guitar. Someone had lost or stolen Abercrombie's gig case on the flight into Nashville. He adored the SE-50 and claimed he couldn't get the sound he wanted from the SE-70. Both were not current products but I went looking to friends in search of an SE-50 we could borrow. In the end he used the current Boss floorboard, an ME-50 if memory serves. He wasn't a prima-donna but it was not to his liking.

I've toyed with buying an SE-50 on Ebay from time to time but just can't justify the purchase. I'm still looking to dump my Digitech RP-1 from what seems a thousand years ago.

Thanks for the info.

This brilliant type of playing is why Jimmie Vaughan is not even on my radar screen. ;)

Very cool playing. You remind me of Holdsworth at times and Vai at times- not to say you don't have your own thing but just initally. You rock. By the way, I owned the SE 50, and SE 70 and have only good things to say about it.

The best part about it at the time was the fact that it didn't alter the tone of the amp through the loop at all. I mean that was my guage. Lots of other units change the tone as soon as you plug them in.

By the way, you prove my theory about the natural tone in your hands. You are playing through old technology from the 90's and you are able to make it sound dynamic and cool.

I used to run my SE 70 through my stereo and get killer effected clean tones. Also I loved the tuner for live. And the idea that I could program the input/output volumes so I could get a clean boost live.

Thanks for listening to the track. As for the MATON JB6 its quite an old guitar its very hard to find any info on it. I,m just looking into getting a digital camera and shall post some Maton pics here for you. I have two Matons one has about 24 sounds you can get from it plus I put a midi pup on it!!! The review you saw on HC was not by me. (maybe I shall do that) :thu:

ATARI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holly crap that brings back memories ... MEGA4ST? I had 2 of those, one with CUBASE and one with a sampler bad ass program that I can't even remember the name of... All MTC together... What a rig... And a 40MB hard drive the size of the PC... Oh, man the memories...

Do you have like that old Cubase with the tiny little icons and no text with the help file all in German? That was always fun...

Nice playing too! BTW...

Dude your playing is mind blowingly musical and your feel and technique are great. What more can I say. Its funny too, that the one tune is done on the SE70. What year did those come out again? 93'??

Whats your current rig?

Thanks again....... right now I,m not sure when the SE70 came out but I remember I had just come back from Japan working on a similar product for a certain big Japanese company (theres only 3!!!) and I saw this SE70 tried it and thought it was great for many things so got it.

My current rig is all kinds of things, I,m a sucker for multi FX units in the studio (BOSS GT-5 & GT-8, Yamaha MagicStomp & UD Stomp, DiGiTech RP350, Marshall JMP-1, Roland GP-8 and Yamaha FX770) but live its a Mesa Boogie MK111 combo with a homemade pedalboard mainly with BOSS FXs (stomp boxes)and two rack delays (Yamaha D1500 and BOSS DE-200) I also use PALMER gear now a PDI-05 and PGA-04 the SE70 sounds even better through the PDI-05 the only other multi FX unit I,ve used live has been the BOSS GT-5 just for the ODs (they are analog) and FXs.

I found this page for info on the guitar:

Looks sweet.

Thanks ......Yes I,ve seen that on the Maton page its not very complete I want to ask them a couple of things. I shall be posting some pics of my Matons, and if I can find them some info from two of there old catalogues. :thu:

Yep ATARI and Cubase...........I loved it, Couldn,t even sell it in the end I gave it to a friend. It was all in English (I am English I just happen to live in Germany!!!) I actually found that for midi guitar it worked better than the super hip laptop studio I have now.!!!!! :(

Let's not forget one of the coolest vocoder effects with the addition of a mic! ;)

Yep........I,ve never got round to using the Vocoder but have heard other people using it to great effect. And of course it has a monophonic synth (Inst/Line or Mic input) I,ve used it a couple of times. Heres a link to 4 short fusion solos I did on a session :wave:http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6726232  they are all on the BOSS SE70 and the 2nd solo I mixed in some of the SE70 synth. Solos 1,2 & 4 are the Maton and 3 is a custom thing I designed (a piece of junk!!!)

That's funny I still have my GP-8 too! and a VP-77 and a ProGap. I use them as front end chain for my Bridge Peizos now... Small world isn't it?

GP-8! Did you buy it new?? I remember checking it out quite a bit around 1984, Terrell!

The SE-70 must've been released around 1993-4. The SE-50 was current when I worked at GC in Chicago. (1991-2)

Hey "TERRELL" and "FANTASICSOUND" we must be the last few with a ROLAND GP8. I was lucky mine was given to me it was always used at home then found its way into some sessions (film and library music) I remember Prince, Status Quo and Frank Zappa all used them to great effect. I have a couple of great sounds I just can,t get on anything else including a great classic Mark Knopfler sound. Heres a home demo on cassette of the GP8....(not the M.K. sound!!!) http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6485157 Its called "Karin Takes The Keys And Drives To Munich" :thu:
