the last week or so we discovered a birds nest in our hedge. in this nest were 5 lil guys. we have kept watch on developments each day. my wife has acted like the grandma, always checking.

well since this morning they each left one by one. until only one was left. he was a little slow in taking the plunge. we were outside with the camera waiting for him to earn his wings.

we have a few pics of him moving from branch to branch until he was ready. but at last he did it and the nest is now empty.

pics will follow.

we must be bored.

Actually, that's great, 'Zan! Sure beats watching re-runs of loads of lameness on TV. Hmn, you had your own private little nature-documentary goin' on there...

Tastes like chicken... :D:freak:

(Sorry... that was so totally wrong. ;)

Earlier this summer Lilly and some kids at the community center found a baby bird that had apparently fallen from a nest tucked into the roof of the building. She gave it water and mashed up bugs to feed it. (I kid you not.) She took care of it most of the day until I arrived and had to inform her there was nothing we could do for it. I couldn't bring it home even if I had the ability to properly care for it, which I didn't. I certainly couldn't send it back to the community center with her every day either. In the end I had her put it back where they found it. (They had brought it to a more sheltered area.) I expect it became cat food. I didn't relish leaving it to the elements and predators but there was no returning it to the nest. Sad. :(

Glad all yours appear to have survived to flight. Great pics, too.

Here in Canada we call them "Les oiseaux qui boivent du sirop d'érable et mangent du bacon du dos", or "Birds that drink maple syrup and eat back bacon".

Nah... it's a finch.
