Kayvon
I've just finished watching a seminal performance by Marvin Gaye from the Montreaux and it just so happens i'm planning a couple days excursion somewhere undecided in Europe. Well I put 2+2 together and decided why not trot off to Montreux where umpteen live shows from the greats have been recorded, many of which reside on my hard drive or Youtube. Thing is I know nothing about the festival, truth be told I thought it was in Canada. Well, apparently not, it's in Switzerland and it starts in 2 days time. Anyone been and have an opinion on the festival? Anyone going? These are the type of things i'm interested in seeing; Erykah Badu, Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Babyshambles (don't ask, i'm just curious) Gnarls Barkley, N.E.R.D, Jill Scott, Joe Sample + Crusaders, Patrice Rushen, Rahsaan Patterson, Sam Sparro, Tower of Power (workshop aswell) Thing is, this thing is not cheap, in fact it's very bloody expensive. Oh well, any thoughts?
orangefunk
don't bother... the Montrux fest has become more of a corporate thing IMHO... waaaaaaaaaaaay too expensive. go to the Lugano Jazz Fest in Lugano Switzerland... its free abd lasts 3 days... and theres plenty of tent space (£10 per night or so) about about a 15 min train ride away in Maroggia and the like... cheapest holiday I had and I saw McCoy Tyner, Gary Bartz, Joe Sample, Louis Vega and the like.. Also theres Mendrisio Fest not too far away as well... (but thats already gone) Lugano Jazz is 3 4 and 5 of July so get your skates on... ;-)
Kayvon
Cool, thanks for the reply Orange. The Lugano festival sounds interesting, I once read in a copy of High Times that it was a good place to smoke hash. The Montreux festival does look almost prohibitively expensive. I mean, what's the point of a festival if you have to pay to see all the individual artists? I'm gonna do some reading up on both, I could just think of the Montreux as a couple of expensive gigs but I wouldn't mind that music festival vibe where there's lots of performing going on. Hmm, I hope my passport is still in date...
herojoe
Is this the same Montreux that's on the lake geneva shoreline? Where Frank Zappa and the mothers were at the best place around?

Tonysounds
Is this the same Montreux that's on the lake geneva shoreline? Where Frank Zappa and the mothers were at the best place around? Actually, Yes; Zappa was at the Montreux Casino (not the Jazz Festival) before some stupid with a flaregun burned the place to the ground. But it was in the same city, Montreux. And the funky Claude that was running in and out, draggin' kids on the ground? That's Claude Nobs, director of the Montreux Jazz Festival. But no matter what we got out of this, we never forgot. (at least I didn't) Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.

Micro Breweries everywhere it seemed Flavoured beer's usually a big no no in my book but I had some great peach/blueberry flavoured ones. Hey Orangefunk, i've had a little look at the Lugano festival's lineup, do any other acts play about the town or is everything focused on those main 9 gigs? I think Rachelle Ferrell is the only one I know & really care for. Marcus Miller is a great player but i'm not so sure I'd enjoy his gig. Jimmy Cliff is cool aswell but i'm not so sure i'd really travel just to see him. I did see some amatuer musicians playing funk stuff around the town though.. nothing to write home about though... I think the best thing to do (in future) is to stay there from around the 1st of July and visit Mendrisio for the free concert there too... I remember Soft Machine did that gig a few years back The cool thing about Lugano is thats its also broadcast live on TV so theres all these cool screens and TV crews and tents and stuff all going on... there were also some incredible looking women around who are advertising promoting all kinds of things from beer to cigarettes in tight jeans and little bomber jackets... that Italian/Swiss thing is really appealing! Dave Horne
Jazz festival ... what's that? Hip hop, rock, pop, bad pop, bad rock ... where's the beef? No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message. In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments. Kayvon
Hi Dave, I think we've had this discussion before If you can't find it maybe someone can help you but I don't have the time. However, if you'd like to talk about any upcoming interesting European music festivals in a Jazz vein/lineage please do so in this thread Btw, I was thinking about a trip to Amsterdam + Haarlem before this Montreux idea, nice this time of year? latchmo
I've played in Montreux a few times, both at Jazz Fest and in the casino. You do have to pay seperately for each show in the main rooms (Auditorium Stravinsky and Miles Davis Hall) but there is also tons of free music (granted, not headline names) in the streets, parks and bars/cafes. Montreux is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been too. Anywhere on the shores of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) is gorgeous. As far as music "outside of jazz" at Jazz Festivals goes, all of the major and respected jazz fests in Europe (Nice Jazz, Jazz à Marciac, Jazz à Vienne, ect..) have a stage and/or night dedicated to "other" music such as blues, reggae, gospel, world music, ect.. You can see McCoy Tyner one night and the Skatellites the next! Expand your horizons
Steve Force
I was at the 1990 Montreux festival. Loved it! Hard to get tickets to some of the events, though (but to be fair, I did a spur-of-the-moment motorcycle trip from Stuttgart to Montreux so I couldn't expect much.) Mark Schmieder
Yeah, even though my company ran the show up until we finally had enough trained people to hand it off to a couple of years ago, several of my co-workers head over to the Lugano festival if they get the chance while working the Montreux show :-). Unfortunately, as was pointed out, Montreux has drifted rather far away from its original purpose and focus. Even so, there's always a lot of good acts to see there -- although some are only peripherally connected with the main event. It ends up being a bit of a networking thing both for musicians and audio professionals as well. This is going to sound weird to anyone who doesn't work in the audio industry, but I count myself lucky that I have not yet been asked to go to the Montreux festival. Kayvon
I was just watching a Parliament performance from Montreux. The crowd seemed a little muted although like they were having fun but the show sounded great especially Belita Woods & Kendra & the main male vocalist (Gary Cooper or Robert Johnson?) I think i've left it too late to go now, Erykah Badu has probably just played tonight and she's one of the main ones I wanted to see. Maybe i'll just spend my money going to see her gig in Amsterdam.
