I got them for about half price. They make for some mighty fine sittin'. I have two hallogen desk lights with dimmers that don't buzz. They were not cheep, but I still listen carefully (and in disbelief) when dimming. -David R. This message has been edited by dxr@iname.com on 08-03-2001 at 01:36 PM

Good question, but pretty hard for me to answer... Obviously anyone's most important tools when dealing with audio is their ears, so as "cute" as it might sound to say that, I have to agree with those who already did. Outside of that, it's too close to call. How do you take anything out of the signal path? I mean, sure I could say my twp Yamaha AW4416's, but they're pretty useless without amps and monitors, or microphones for that matter. But I do spend a lot of time interfacing with those. Same with my computer and Logic Platinum and Vegas Audio. My Telefunken 251's get a lot of use. So do my Oktava MC012's and LOMO M3, Ensoniq DP/4's, Rode NTK, Vintech 1272, JBL monitors... etc... I'd have to say two things I built myself. First my room, which I did the math and put up the absorbers and it made a huge difference in my mixes translating, even with NS-10m studios (and two other sets or speakers). And second, my guitar. It's homemade and ugly, but it has a solid Rosewood Schecter neck (1-3/4" at the nut), semi hollow American Cherry body with EMG active PUs and an acoustic style bridge with Martin thin line PU and pre built in. I can get great electric and acoustic tones really quickly if I'm in a hurry. Oh yeah, I got one of those expensive rolling style office chairs and it's great, extremely necessary.

Patch bays (Just recently talked myself into finally getting a couple of patch bays...how did I manage without them?) H&K Red Box CD Burner Piccolo snare ($100 cheapo but it works!) I thought about it for a long time, and after excluding the obvious things like my ears and neural cortex, I have to declare a tie: t.c. electronic M3000 - 95% of my sound sources are synthetic in nature, so the ability to give them a sense of space or “air” without making them seem effected is very important to avoid that in-your-face direct sound. The M3000 allows me to do this easily and with a very neutral tone color. Decay times between 0.1 and 0.3 seconds are my friend. Peavey PC1600x - I use this MIDI controller for so many things, from synth tweaking to ProTools mixing to effects processor editing. In particular, I have templates built for reverb control such that I have fast, intuitive control of early reflection levels and color, reverb time, density, frequency balance, etc. It allows me to get effects to sit in a mix more quickly. Needless to say, it also is a godsend for softsynths.
Go tell someone you love that you love them.

It's hard to boil it down to one tool. Didn't I just do this? How about top the 5 in no particular order? 1. Neumann TLM-170 2. Martin 00-18 circa 1958 3. Sonar 2 XL 4. JBL 4313s 5. Ampex ATR-102

Another "tool" thread. This one was brought back from the dead. Does that make it a "dead" tool? huh huh huh Seriously, it's amazing how tools change over time. If asked that question today, I'd add Pro Tools, ADAM monitors, Soundelux ELUX 251 and "my ears" to my earlier list. ;)

Have to say this Cakewalk Home Studio XL which is probably gonna be upgraded to Sonar soon, though I don't know why this does all I need. I added the VSampler to it and it's extremely joyful programming drums, which I never thought I'd say.

Other than my Mac, the MCDSP MC 2000 multiband compressor software for Pro Tools. I don't have the real things but this piece of software sure does the job.

This aint exactly a tool - But Ive reduced the number of switches i have to flip to get my studio fired up. One wall switch does most of my stuff. A seperate one for the AW 4416 recorder another for the PC and Im all set. Dont touch that switch!!!! (you need to consider where they are placed).

Check out some tunes here:

I just installed a genuine Florida-built voting machine. It erases floppies, Zips, hard drives, SCSIs, IDEs, and 2" tape to better-than-virgin Quality!! Beautiful! My second choice (since I'm mostly a live musician) is a small CD/MP3 player, so I no longer have to rewind casettes while learning a song. Not glamorous, but sure is nice!! :thu:
