Kramer Ferrington III.
As a result of the various reso threads, I've been thinking and I've never seen this topic come up in a thread before. Personally, I really, really love Old Time music. Not country, not exactly bluegrass but Old Time. I'd love to get into a band playing that stuff, but I've never met anyone else into playing it. Is anybody else here into it too? (for the uninitiated, here's a pretty fair example) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeWZLY95x3s Band MySpace My snazzy t-shirt empire

Kramer Ferrington III.
Oh, I just added a link to the original post. Erm... stuff like The Blue Sky Boys, the Original Carter Family, that sort of Appalachian stuff full of train wrecks, saintly mothers and dying orphan children hoping to meet everybody on Life's Other Shore. Accompanied by guitar, mandolin, and perhaps dulcimer and autoharp. Band MySpace My snazzy t-shirt empire

Dr. Ellwood
This is pure Americana. Allot of the music of the American Civil War period sounded like this. This music has very long roots with Irish and Scottish folk music. http://www.thestringnetwork.com
mdrs
Vince...I LOVE what you are callin "Old Time" music. I'd think it's in the rhelm of bluegrass. To me, this is perhaps a musical equivalent to going to Church!!! Doc Watson in one of my fav's; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRGxbFmIni4 I lived in Louisville, Ky. for a little over 8 years, and was exposed to a lot of Bluegrass. I wish I'd been playing more of it, but mostly I was just soaking it in. Bluegrass players are some of the hottest players of stringed instruments around, too. Kramer Ferrington III.
Yeah, it's music from a different, slower world. I've always loved it. I find it extremely soothing. I think the diff between Old Time and Bluegrass is that Bluegrass is more about soloing. Band MySpace My snazzy t-shirt empire

Trucks
Yeah Caev I was just gonna say, the most recent incarnation I have come across is "The Soggy Bottom Boys" version of Man of Constant Sorrow. It was one of the first bluegrass songs I learned to play on me acoustic geetbox. Very cool way of using rythm. Soundclick Myspace
mdrs
One of the most moving songs I've ever heard is "O Death", done by Ralph Stanley on the Soggy Bottom Boys CD. The first link is just the song, and the second is a live performance. I'm posting from my surgicenter, and don't have audio. So I HOPE they are of decent quality. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOy-zX2Q56M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f60UEe2LuLw Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. fantasticsound
Oops! I premature-postilation! I meant to add Lilly absolutely adored Go To Sleep Little Baby among others. Mudcat
Vince, If you haven't already, you really need to check out Old Crowe Medicine Show. These guys are great. They play real, old time, string band music. I saw them open for BR-549 a few years ago. They are amazing. Mudcat's music on Soundclick "Work hard. Rock hard. Eat hard. Sleep hard. Grow big. I loved hearing George Clooney talk about how he intended to sing his parts for MoCS, went into the studio and performed a few takes and thought he was really on it. Then, after being told they wanted to bring in a pro, he begrudgingly listened to Dan Tyminski do one take and cried, "uncle!" Thank goodness they didn't have to convince him Dan was better. Thanks for that, "who plays that sort of stuff now?" was going to be my next question. Bruce: I used to have an album of theirs with songs from (I think) 1927 or thereabouts. But, like a lot of those older blues and country musicians, they got picked up and rediscovered in the whole folkie revival in the early 60s. So you can get a live album from 1964, I think. But their voices sound a lot older. Band MySpace My snazzy t-shirt empire

Trucks
Vince, If you haven't already, you really need to check out Old Crowe Medicine Show. I totally forgot about these guys! Great stuff. I should have remembered, as a Banjo playin' buddy of mine made me record the rhythm guitar to one of the songs, for him to practice over. Don't remember the song.. It was a few cowboy chords, but the rest of the parts were pretty funky. (Yeah, I betchya know which one I mean now) Soundclick Myspace
