possibly (likely) dumb question...

Ok, remember, I've never had lessons, so don't crucify me yet!

So, assuming that this is in the first position and no open strings, what would be the correct fret-hand fingering for the following (or is there a correct fingering?)?

[also assuming I wrote it the way I intended...]

Also, cookies to whomever uses more parentheses than I did in this thread!

There are lots of possible fingerings.

zombieater's works. He has finger numbers but unless you have five fingers in addition to your thumb (maybe he does), use your fourth finger on the 5th fret notes.

Here's another one (based on Simandl fingerings)

frets:

1 3 0 1 3 0 1 3 0 2 3 5

fingers:

1 4 0 1 4 0 1 4 0 1 1 4

F G A Bb C D Eb F G A Bb C

By the way, the question is definitely not a dumb one. In fact it's a very good question.

If I didn't want to play open strings, I might finger it

1 1 4 1 1 4 1 1 4 1 2 4

F G A Bb C D Eb F G A Bb C

or maybe:

1 1 3 4 1 3 4 1 4 1 2 4

or play it all on the E string with my left thumb. or right index finger. :)

Yeah, the 1 2 5 really threw me for a loop at first. :) I was thinking, "What the... is zero a thumb??":)

So what you guys are saying, there isn't really any one way that's better than another.

What they said.

I would also typically not play something like that without any open strings if I wanted to stay in first position for some reason. The big jumps from A to Bb and D to Eb are difficult to execute accurately at higher speeds.

Glad it wasn't a dumb question (got lucky this time).

I normally wouldn't play it without open strings either, but I was doing finger exercises the other night, and I thought "What if I'm doing this wrong? What if there's an easier way? What am I doing? Where am I?"

At that point, I thought I'd post. :D
