miggs
Hi everyone. I am new to posting on this board. I have been reading, lurking and learning for quite a while, and thought I would share some of our work. My brother and I have been recording on and off for several years now. He is an accomplished guitarist. I come from an art and architecture background, and have been self-teaching myself recording, engineering, mixing etc over the last few years. We use Sonar XL 1.3, Roland GR33 guitar synth, Line 6 Pod, Yamaha 12 channel mixer, M Audio SP5B nearfield monitors, Aureal Vortex AU8830 sound card and an 8gb/512 ram computer. We will be upgrading to better sound card and computer and to Sonar 4PE in the next few months. Here is a link to some of our songs. We welcome feedback of any kind, especially in regards to: a. EQing (I have been struggling with low end mud for years... still trying to learn the best way to EQ things especially bass and kick.) b. mixing c. composition d. or anything else that you hear. 'Sway' is bossa nova with a touch of surf. (Keep in mind that the ending just sorta falls apart. Still needs to be composed.) 'The Far Away Near' is an experiment in 5/4 time composition which turned out to be kind of a nice tune. 'Organza' is a lament with some fun use of backwards guitar. 'The Road' reminds me of the vast open landscapes while travelling through the western United States. 'Because' is a coda to an unfinished song. A bright compositon with guitars and sitar. Listen and Enjoy! :)

Hand out, have fun talking to everyone and build your post count. More than anything, get to know the great people on this forum. Once you've done the work, You'll see it was well worth yur time. I keep on telling myself I'll check out songs, but rarely ever do it. Usually if someone seems particularly interesting or if the're talking about music I like, I'll click on their signature website link, if they have one, and check 'em out. Some are very good. Some are very bad. But most are the babies of proud mamas and papas, and I think folks here are courteous enough that if "they can't say anything good, they say nothing at all." Dan Worley
I've been experimenting with using no compression at all, and as little EQ as possible. Trying to get everything as right as I can in the tracking. Man, it's tough, it's like trying to quit eating sugar or smoking, or something. Here's a song I wrote and recorded with my band in our humble studio. The acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass and shaker were recorded live. The piano, B3 (synth), vocals & BGVs were recorded later, whenever we had time. The drums were recorded in another studio and the tracks sent to me. "Chance or 2" No compression. EQ only on vox and piano. Let me know what you think. I am looking for feedback on the mix the song the performances, whatever... Please don't be shy or feel you have to be kind. Thanks! c-ya, Dan Worley
Steve Presley
Well done Dan. I really enjoyed the track. Everything sits in the mix very well for me. I like the style and really like the guitar sound. I'm not not sure how very original the sound is, but you did a nice job of making it your own. Nice full sound. :thu: sojend Out of the pan and into the fire!

nursers
Ok, I've finally got off my butt and done a new song: Learmont It's an electronic piece. Mainly interested in thoughts on production and originality (if there's any!) Have also posted this on the wonderful Phil's forum, hope that's ok ;) And I promise to listen to some of the music listed above! boosh
Now that is cool Nursers!! There's a lot going on there and nicely panned also,..nothing interferes or clashes. Only thing(but that's my personal thingy) I would have put more beat in it. Well not more but I mean a more present beat... This reminds me of a french band called Air and of Tangerine dream. Good 1!! Fan, nu pissar jag taggtråd igen. Jag skulle inte satt på räpan. http://www.bushcollectors.com
nursers
Boosh you rock - comparing it to Air and / or Tangerine Dream is very very kind ;) I agree with you on the beat - I may revisit the drum track. Boosh - I have one Air CD (whose name escapes me at present) - but what one would you recommend? I loved that song they did where the video showed a teenage couple talking to each other about life, the universe and everything. Steve Presley
Great sound stage Nursers. Loved the mood and feel you create. I liked the placement of the instruments in the sound field. I'm with Boosh on the drum track. I'd like to hear it a bit deeper and stronger. I enjoyed the track!! sojend Out of the pan and into the fire! Phait
That thread NEEDS to be sticky. Thanks Stranger :thu: I've been wanting to do some demos for my more laid back (doesn't necessarily require me to be in a bad mood to write) music project, "rouge~fire". http://www.phait-accompli.com/rougefire/ 160 kbps, 2.98 MB I actually had the beat and electric-piano for some unreleased "Halcyon Sedation" demo experiments, and today as tired as I am I managed to find something to flow with it, I think. Rim
Can you folks help me? My band recorded 8 songs for a demo and we're trying to pick songs that should be in there. We are all in agreement in only 3 of them. On 4 of them, the band is split 50/50 (half want it on the demo, the other half doesn't). We unanimously voted down 1 song off the demo. After discussing it last night, we thought maybe we are too close to the material to be objective so we are trying to poll for external feedback. We are a cover band so the primary goal for the demo is to get us gigs. If we decide to put more than 3, then we may also decide to sell them at shows. Here are the songs in question (in alphabetical order): All the Small Things Are You Gonna Be My Girl Celebrity Skin Teenage Dirtbag At the very least, please let me know if you think the song should or should not be on our demo. If you'd like to add more commentary, then that'd be even better. - Rim aka riffing Double Post music: Strip Down http://rimspeed.com http://loadedtheband.com
Kris
Rim... One option for you that I've seen work well for cover acts is to use all the tracks but just fade in/out 15 - 30 sec. clips of the best piece of the tune. Rim
Interesting, Kris. I know whoever books acts will not listen to the CD in its entirety. Is this common practice? I guess my concern is, what if the person wanted to hear more? aka riffing Double Post music: Strip Down http://rimspeed.com http://loadedtheband.com

Phait
Dazed "Take A Chance" is very 80's rock. Not a bad thing, but not my bag either. The vocals sound forced, which wouldn't be a problem in my opinion if it didn't happen every second. During the "take a chance on madness" chorus, drums sound weak, like they belong in a different song. Another nitpick is the vocal "around you" sounds more like "aroun joo". I notice this in alot of popular songs, just kinda annoys me. Overall the mix sounded well done but it seemed like the drums killed it.
Phait
Here's another rouge~fire demo.... it's kinda out there I mean... not my typical kind of arrangement. It's kind of an ironic song, given the title you'd think this might be hard rock, but it's not.
