allright the time has come to show who can be the real man here. anger is a bad thing, and i have made it my personal choice to try and avoid it, and perhaps solve it whenever possible. that said, curve dominant, i forgive you. i understand that maybe something bad happened to you to make you act like such a jerk, or maybe you are just a kid. either way, i am ending this now. i offer anyone and everyone access to what i believe is music from my soul, bigtime or smalltime. i offer it in a way as to be not arrogant, superiour, or in anyway berading of what other people think music is and should be. i do not insult other peoples music, nor have i ever acted arrogant about me being better than anyone else. i am always helpful to people when they come to my studio, even if i really do not like what they are doing. where i get frustrated is when people have a horrible arrogant attitude; a superiority contest, and choose not to participate in a mature manner. i have found that the best musicians, composers, producers, are the most gentle and accepting people there are. i ran sound 'blind' (no rehersal) for yanni's keyboard player a while ago, and let me tell you- i was so scared that he would be a big time asshole and berade me for being from 'little time' fargo nd that i practically made myself sick. to my suprise, he was one of the nicest people i have ever met and i was comfortable for the whole show, and did a great job. i hated the music, but that is beside the point. this theme has been my experience time and time again, the best people are the nicest;most helpful people there are. its the people who know they are not anygood, or uncomfortable with who they are who hide behind a curtain of arrogance and intimidation. they also have nothing to offer. i personaly apologize to everyone on this forum for stooping to such a low level as a few others here. i am above all that, and you are free to listen to my music without fear of getting your head ripped off by any comments you make about it. www.mp3.com/xtac as for you curve, until you post some tunes, or come clean, or have ANYTHING positive to say, i have no time for you. i am too busy in my studio, with my girlfriend, and with the friends i have that make music. i suspect i'll never waste my time with you again. i am sorry i stooped to your level, and wont do it again. now it is time for me to go back and listen to several of the tunes listed here- and to that guy who's nobody listened even after posting a few times, your first. i'll write back tommorrow whethter i like it or not. coaster out. robotron- hey just listened to angel eyes- its great! i like the synthesis you have in the begining and througout, is that C or some kind of keyboard, or other? i like the other sounds as well. i think its a good tune, i like the chord changes, they are interesting, but there is a problem can i offer some criticism? the vox get a little out of tune, as the chords are hard to follow for anybody. if i were mixing this, i would leave everything alone except for the vox. here i would go to town! first i would run a low pass filter with a steep slope on the vox. compress it even more than you have, to get the Guttoral sounds out more, more human sounding, you know- more t's, s's, k's, b's, more throat noises. more "badd ass" sounding. i wouldnt change the track itself, just the way it fits into the mix. it needs more POWER. more UGLY; its still a very pretty tune, and i think a little more MACHO on the vox mix would complement the tune well. just my opinion though. feel free to listen to my stuff.
Originally posted by robotobon@home.com: I'm feeling kind of left out here. This is the 3rd post requesting feedback on my music.
"Angel Eyes" Syd Barret vibe... Interesting guitar parts, angular - good mixture of single note melody mixed with chords. I like how accents occur on unpredictable beats. The "hectic" lick is a curious break, but it provides a good contrast to the following section. The guitar seems a *hair* loud in this section.... I like the spring reverb- return sound section. I'd want the guitars panned wider, they seem a tiny bit crowded in the middle. The drums are a bit "splatty", I'd want some more low mids in the toms and maybe less high end attack, and a more up front snare. But it still works fine and isn't a detraction from the over all sound which is probably good enough for most purposes short of "major label". You don't really notice the lack of bass guitar since a lot of pop recordings in this vein tend to be bass-thin, but it really would be ballsier I think with bass guitar.... actually, bass guitar providing a counter-point melody to some sections would be cool. I'm into the Beatles inversions-into-modulation thing as well. Wacked song structure; I like how it ends unfinished sounding, all of the left turns. Overall, modern sounding psychedelia. The singing reminds me of a guy from my hometown who does something kind of similar in a national act called "Billionaire". Sort of like Stone Roses with a touch of the Cult... There are places where the intonation wanders - which in this style wouldn't be that bad, but it sounds doubled in places and that sort of Beatles-trippy vibe works better (*IMO*) when it's spot on and doesn't sound like it's getting loose at the ends of things.... I liked it because it combined the slacker-metal sound with some interesting melodic ideas, and all of the unexpected breaks with the psychedelic sounds were fresh sounding in a "melodic pop" context.
Persistance is a virtue no?
I don't know, I've got a piece of music titled that on my page and despite reviewing a number of people's music, outside of one actual review and Curve's "Muzak" dismissal I've had nothing. Which is just as well, I'm going to wait until I get my "Modern Blues Fusion Thing" going before I turn into a complete promo fiend.... http://www.mp3.com/chipmcdonald This message has been edited by Chip McDonald on 01-24-2001 at 08:41 PM
Originally posted by Curve Dominant: Digitalia isn't bad. I listened to Joy Part 1, Omniscient, and Black Smoke. You have a nice touch with sound, texture, and mood. You also know how to create dimension in your music by juxtaposing elements that contrast each other. You need to work on development. Your pieces set up the listener for a break-out, but it doesn't come - they are very linear. There needs to be a key-change or a tempo change that shifts the piece into another gear. But you have a lot of potential for soundtrack work. BTW - I also agree with Digitalia that there is way too much bickering going on here. Y'all gotta chill out. I'm flattered that y'all want to hear something, so I will post something. Give me a few days to figure out what. I put out a CD a few years ago that isn't getting much play lately, so maybe something from that.
I ditto Tedsters comment...... you da man CD!! Mo

robotobon: i listen to the lofi version so i cant comment on anything other than just the phasing sound eminating from my speakers that makes the song. its pretty cool, stuff i like to make. a little off kilter, i like the juxtaposition of the break to the feeling of the rest of the tune. the guitar in the intro, makes me wanna break out some new experimental songs of my own. check out one of my artists ben creitz www.alphajerk.com i like what he does too. osrt of similar but not really.

OK, SINCE WE'RE ALL TRYING TO GET ALONG... Chip's stuff is not "muzak" stricly speaking, that was an unfair exaggeration. And what I did not include is that Chip has excellent guitar chops, is a good arranger, and his tunes are presented professionally. Majestic 12 is quite good - it has some interesting counterpoint melodies. Overall, your stuff could be edgier, and more dynamic. That's common with a lot of these posts - they don't have the peaks and valleys that you hear in truly great recordings. Listen to U2's "Beautiful Day" - the verse is laid back and easy going, and then the chorus comes roaring out like a blizzard of freight trains. Come to think of it, I have been feeling a little on egde lately. Must have something to do with the fact that I'm in the middle of moving my entire studio to another neighborhood across town, and trying to meet composing deadlines at the same time. I probably chill when I'm all moved in. Oh, by the way, coaster, that was touching and sweet.

I want to thank you all for your listening to my track and offering your great advice. A few notes about the production that you'll get a kick out of: it's all SM57's, into a Spirit LX7 24x4. Very warm board. Anyways, at the time (Feb. 2000), I only had an Sblive. So I mixed the drums then they went to the left channel of the Live mono. The guitar went right. It was recorded in a historic church with a big vaulted ceiling into sound forge. That was a rad space to rehearse, I miss it. Teen center by day, punk rawk club by night. It is a drums and guitar only indie type band, mostly because we've played together since '94 or so and it's hard for someone to step into that. So I didn't overdub bass to keep it real. The intro noise is just phone dialing random numbers in sound forge. For the drums I used T-racks cos it's great for the slow compressor Rick Rubin thang. The guitar is 1 track all the way through, Haas panned. The vocal I agree is horrid, done as reference for later. Totally just a rough first take demo thanks again! -rob

"cringe dominican." That is f*cking funny. I CAN take a joke, ya know. But seriously, what are y'all using to convert your songs to MP3? I got on MP3.com to upload a song, and they got all anal with me. I thought I had a program that does that, but I just cannot f*cking find it. I have a f*cking gazillion software apps on this rig, and I can't find ONE that makes f*cking MP3's. I downloaded iTunes, and converted a song off an old CD, but I can't fucking locate the file when I try to upload it. AAAARRRGGGHHH!!! I hope you monkeys appreciate me taking time out from my move to do this. I've spent four f*cking hours dicking around with this sh*t now, just so y'all can hear one of my tracks. BTW - I'm using MAC OS9. This message has been edited by Curve Dominant on 01-25-2001 at 02:59 AM

OK, it's almost 5am, and I think MP3.com finally got a clue and uploaded my chumpy - BUT WAIT!!! IT HAS TO BE APPROVED??!!! Oh, brutha: Hello ..., We are glad to inform you that your song named '...' has successfully been received. We will listen to it, and if everything is fine, approve it. Expect this to happen within the next few days. After it's been approved, it should appear on the site. MP3.com Staff. So while I'm waiting for my confirmation process to procceed (I may as well be a f*cking supreme court nominee, and no, I do not have an illegal alien doing my dishes), I want a f*cking apology from every f*cking one of you who flamed me for not posting a track before I give y'all the link. Hey Curve - Since you're offering your 'olive branch of peace' to everyone, please tell me what it is that you didn't like about ONOFFON's music. Is it the production? The musicianship? The songwriting? Our choice of instruments? Our genres? Or you just found all aspects of our music repulsive, in general? I sincerely appreciate all constructive criticisms. <> Actually that was in a town near Fort Worth, and what does that have to do with anything? Are there stupid, redneck, bigoted idiots in Texas??? You bet, just look at our president. Does that mean I am? Of course not. Jesus, just post the MP3 and let that be it. I'm done with this. I've never gotten involved in stupid flame wars like this one and, believe me, this is the last time. Being guilty of the same stereotyping you are berating ( i.e., you're from Texas, you must be a bigot ) is so obviously inconsistent . Peace. I'm done. Michael http://www.mp3.com/spillingpoetry

Curve - Now you misquote me, "Come on, y'all, fess up, or I ain't givin' it up. That means you, alpha, von (off, pleez)," I never challenged you to post your music, and yet you continue to take cheap shots at what me and my bandmates are doing. I never insulted you - I just suggested you lay off Chip's opinions. Good luck in all your future endeavors. Von

Yo Michael @pigpants, my grandfather was a Texan, and he was one incredible dude - got hit by a bazooka shell in in WWII and walked from the hospital a month later. Texans are strong people; those guys that killed that brother were drug addicts, and we got them here, too, believe you me. Yo von, why you naggin' me? You gave me static on the "contractual advice" thread, and now you over here buggin'. I don't even know if I listened to your stuff, to be honest. I've listened to so many different posts I'm startin' to lose track of who's who and who's flamin' me and who's cool, and now I sound like a damn owl goin' "who who who." Hello all, Never got any feedback from my earlier post (think I posted in the middel of the argumentative post). So here's a link to some guys I recorded a few months back. These MP3s are directly from the DAT to CD to web unmastered! I did have it mastered professionally and it turned out pretty good. Let me know what you think! Hey - this is not supposed to be a place for bickering. You ask people to listen to something, if you're lucky you'll get feedback. But having said that, as soon as you put your music out into the world, you better have a thick skin. In that sense, this forum is good preparation for the real world Some of the songwriter panels I've gone to have just about left people in tears. Their music means so much to them, and it gets dismissed in 10 seconds, and not necessarily with any kindness. We can certainly do better here. But remember, music is very personal. Think of all the negative reviews Beethoven and Stravinsky got whenever you get discouraged. Oh yes, and the Beatles were just a "boy band" who wouldn't make it past their first album. Perseverence furthers. And don't forget to put on your thick skin.

CRAIG'S BACK!!! I've been busy keeping everyone in line while you were gone, as you can see. They're a rowdy bunch, but nuttin I can't handle. Having fun, actually, but I'm in the middle of moving to 11th & Pine (Craig lived in Illy so he knows where that's at) and it's been a little stressful, so I may have lost my cool a few times. No biggie, they all luv me anyway, right guys? Yo Craigo, I'm gonna post a tune in a few days (I hope - MP3.com moves like gamberi) so keep an eye out.
