Mr Darling
Remarks from Darling Nikkie her self : Smedis : Power pop is not my thing, but Americans love this style. It reminded me of Bon Jovi. Well produced Gustavo - "standing in the rain" Nice dark feel, the bass line changes notes too often IMHO, a simpler line will trance it up a lot. It could almost be a strong "Beloved" (a succesfull English dance act) song. Nice vox but why not in spanish. Tenishia - "What kinda feelin" The vocals are fantastic. Loved the lyrics, the backing vocals (if you ever want to do my live backing your wellcome - when we tour the US) and the atmosphear. I only missed a little bit more music (could be the mix, or the fact that it is a mp3) By the way - great look. That's all I had time to listen to now, check out my stuff and tell me ------------------ Visit http://www.DarlingNikkie.com/sounds for free MP3's Rotshtein Danny - Studio Engineer Jingles show-reel Visit DarlingNikkie.com To discover the sounds of "Darling Nikkie"(aka Jade 4U). . . . m2
Originally posted by philbo2@cedar-rapids.net: Yo Macle - I listened to 'Despair' and 'Fingerprints' I like them both. Despair has a really nice symphonic sound and great composition, excellent vocals (you can tell it was born of real emotion). Nicely done! Fingerprints is very original sounding, and has a sort of a quirky happy pop groove aligned with the paranoid lyrics - an interesting juxtaposition. (Sorry, I'm not trying to sound pretentious....) Anyway, keep doing what you're doing - I like it! - Philbo Tangent Music http://artists3.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Tangent2/
Hey Philbo, thanks very much! And my girlfriend thanks you for the vocal compliment on Despair. (Is that weird, btw, her singing lead, and then me singing lead?) Really glad, too, that you think Fingerprints is original sounding. A while back, when I posted Joke, a couple people felt there was a bit too much thievery in the sound (maybe it was just me haircut). So thanks!! m2
Originally posted by WFTurner: Ain't checked out some of the links here in awhile... Macle: For some reason my media player won't load the MP3's but did listen to the RealPlayer version of "Joke" Very nicely done, as mentioned in other posts, very Beatle-ish, specifically Lennon-ish. Don't think the world got enough of Lennon before his untimely death and some where down the road when he's faded somewhat more from pop memory I could see a cycle comiing around where someone could make a cash killing doing that kind of stuff. I read all your lyrics, and find them interesting and the two tunes I didn't hear, have an acute interest in hearing due to the structure of the lyrics. The only downside for me personally is they all seem to have a strong sense of melancholy which is something I have never found attractive in music, Lennon actually went thru a stage of writing that way and was the least favorite of his stuff for me. That's just my fault as a listener, not the fault of any artist... it's like something so full of melancholy is too personal... more than I need to know.... all in all.. though... to me it seems your headed in a very good direction. I have had a month, that has shook me and scared me to death, and I'm spending my time this morning, my second day at home recuperating from cancer surgery from which by some miracle I've come out with an excellent and very positive prognosis... from that and taking the time to have a few listens this morning I now find myself anticipating, planning and building this passionate love I have for music rather than trying to figure out how I was going to get it all archived in what I feared could have been a very short time. It truly is a wonderful life, a wonderful world... a wonderful art!! ------------------ William F. Turner Songwriter turnermusic
Hi William, thanks very much for checking out my stuff. Sorry the downloads didn't work. A few people have mentioned this to me, so I set up an alternate spot which should work. http://macle.webjump.com/ I am quite a Lennon fan, so it's a great compliment when ever anyone says my stuff sounds like him, even if maybe some times I go a bit overboard! As far as making cash doing Lennon-type stuff (or any kind of stuff, for that matter), well that would be something!! As far as the meloncholy aspect, I suppose I do tend to write sad songs a lot (not always!), though I think these ones are a bit tongue-in-cheek. Someone on the Home Recording board said "sad, but strangely happy". Thanks very much for showing interest in the lyrics. I'm really into lyrics, not just the content, but even things like the fact that in Despair, the lyrics don't rhyme, except the bridge. (Btw, my girlfriend, who sings the lead on Despair, helped in the writing of these songs.) Very glad to hear your surgery went well, and that your prognosis is extremely good. I can't imagine what you've been through, but I wish you all the best. I listened to the songs you had on your playlist, and they are very nice. Nothing On This Side Of Heaven is a beautiful tune. Sort of reminds me of Willie Nelson. And the Mella Guitar Fella instrumental shows some really tasty guitar playing. Keep it up!! WFTurner
Macle I'll check that alternative link out. Regards to my comments about the lyrics, melancholy was a poor choice of word of description. Shit, take away that which is melancholy and sad and you've stripped away much of the staple of life and what it bears to write about. Perhaps a sense of the self destructive side of the human nature would better describe what I was trying to convey... doesn't matter... you seem to have a handle on what you want to convey and I look forward to hearing the music along with the lyrics. Anderton
BTW William, my very best friend in the world was told 14 years ago she had six months to live. She didn't like that answer and decided that if the doctors had given up on her, it was up to her to learn to be a doctor and find a solution. She did...a combination of alternative therapies (no radiation, no chemo), mostly vitamin C drips and keeping her body pH non-acidic. She also eats organic food and does reasonable vitamin doses (not megadose type stuff). She's still here, she's been totally clean of cancer for over a decade, and her blood panel results would be the envy of any health fanatic. As a bonus, she also gets to laugh at doctors . clock
hi dave bryce. Your song is FREAKING AWESOME. This is a hit song in itself. By the way, a friend of mine said that you better not let the vocalist get away. He is awesome. I have this wager with my friend. I think that you recorded it yourself, at home, but were able to get such a good mix and such great quality out of experience. He thinks that you did it in a studio, with an SSL and the good stuff. which is it. I mean, I know it is not a traditional homerecording. You were probably using a u87 through an api or something, but did you do this yourself? do you mind sharing your vocal signal path, and the effects and a-d converters used. Finally, did this song get mastered at a mastering facility. The best I've heard in some time. peace

I am lucky to be able to work with him. I have this wager with my friend. I think that you recorded it yourself, at home, but were able to get such a good mix and such great quality out of experience. He thinks that you did it in a studio, with an SSL and the good stuff. You'd be correct. We did the whole thing at my house - no pro studio. The vocals were cut in my son's bedroom. which is it. I mean, I know it is not a traditional homerecording. You were probably using a u87 through an api or something, but did you do this yourself? It is actually a traditional home recording. I really think that a great deal of the reason that this tune came out sounding nice is mostly of a reflection of my monitors than any skill that I have - I like them a lot... they force me to do good mixes, and the mixes that I do on them translate very well to other systems. Even mp3... Also, my friend Randy Neiman did the final mix with me. He is a very skilled engineer. I consider myself fortunate to be able to work with such gifted people. do you mind sharing your vocal signal path, and the effects and a-d converters used. Okay...if you insist. The mic is a GT AM62, which I think is one of the great unlauded mics on the market. It was plugged into a Behringer T1952 "tube" mic pre which was routed directly into the line level inputs of an Alesis X2 console, and recorded flat - I did some limiting using the MasterWorks plug-in that comes with Digital Performer. The main effect on the vocal is a Lexicon PCM90 doing the reverb, with the delay coming from the stock delay plug-in that comes with Digital Performer. The X2's buss outputs are plugged into an Alesis M20, which is acting as an A-D converter only. The M20 is connected via light pipe to a MOTU 2408. Finally, did this song get mastered at a mastering facility. Nope. The best I've heard in some time. Wow...once again, thank you! dB This message has been edited by Dave Bryce on 07-13-2001 at 05:31 PM ==> David Bryce Music • Funky Young Monks <==

I think that you recorded it yourself, at home, but were able to get such a good mix and such great quality out of experience. >> Not to speak for Dave, but...as for one explanation of why his stuff sounds good, don't forget he has designed synths and done patches, so his ears are VERY finely calibrated. This makes a big difference when going after the perfect mix or master, as these are affected by very subtle gradations of sound. People who can hear a change of a quarter dB up or down are at a real advantage compared to those whose ears are not as experienced in doing critical listening (as opposed to just plain listening). Dave, please jump in if this is a mistaken assumption.
Well, I'm not sure that I'd have explained it exactly that way, but I guess there's no question that experience points do count for something. Besides being fortunate to have a decent and relatively well-trained (although decidedly un-golden ) ear, I try to learn something from each project that I do, and hopefully each subsequent project will benefit from the experiences gleaned from the prior ones. I've been lucky enough to be exposed to really good people who have been kind enough to share their experiences and observations, and I have done my best to listen to what they have to say and learn from them. I would like to believe that as a result of all of this that I have learned how to listen more discerningly, and that it has helped me tremendously not only mixing, but in doing instrument arrangements and tracking so that things don't get in each other's way. Also, I cannot emphasize enough how important I believe having a good set of monitors is - to me, they are possibly the most important piece of gear in your studio. If you have great monitors, I think that the whole process of making and recording music becomes much easier. Besides, Valky played trombone on the tune! That's what really did it! dB This message has been edited by Dave Bryce on 07-11-2001 at 10:27 PM ==> David Bryce Music • Funky Young Monks <==

clock
hi anderton, I have a question. You mentioned that some people can hear a quarter of a db increments. Is this possible? I read that the mimimum increase in volume that the human ear can hear is 1 decibel. How does one train his ear to hear quarter decibel increases. This also leads me to the eq window thing. On some cds, I hear two vocals on two different tracks sound different. For example, one might have slightly more high end. Yet, both sounds are what I would call "perfect" How many dbs'would you say that an average eq window is?

There are people on this forum who know that, and I do not want this to be seen as me trying to help to sell monitors here - it is pretty well known that I am not a fan of doing that on the forums. I honestly believe that the manner in which they allow me to hear the soundscape is responsible for a radical improvement in my mixing skills - that's why I got involved with bringing them to the US.
