Very cool.

OK. Dumb question. How do I save these on a Mac in my iTunes?

Thanks.

Right click (Ctrl Click if you're on a laptop or a one button mouse) on the links and select Download Linked File. After you've downloaded, drag them import them into iTunes.

I just spent way too much time downloading that then looking through all the other links too. Most of them are not available, but I did find a Humble Pie @ BBC I'm sure I'll love.

And did you know there was a lost Gaucho album with almost completely different songs on it? I didn't!

Prague, that's a miracle find. Bodhisattva just blew me away. Sounds like Denny Diaz panned left, Skunk Baxter panned right, and Fagen on synth in the middle.

This is when I know life is good.

I listened after downloading these tunes last night and I have a general question that applies to many of us.

Why is it that when we perform a tune live that we speed up the tempo?

I'm sure this has happened to you.

And the short answer is, of course, that we're nervous and/or we're excited about the performance. So we forget to 'catch ourselves' and end up starting the song too fast.

On the other hand, back in the day, I've sequenced MIDI files to use as backing tracks in a live performance.

It was obvious that the MIDI files, that were at the original tempo that I borrowed from the recording, were too slow for live performance.

This happens all - the - time.

Now somebody give me a valid reason that I can sink my teeth into.

It's very difficult to maintain the energy and intensity of a tune at the original tempo live. It takes a ton of effort, listening, and concentration to make it feel right and feel natural without kicking the tempo up a notch or so. In many respects, this is what separates some of the greatest groups/bands/acts/musicians from the rest is that ability to make the song feel right live at tempo.

Very cool. I just listened to Pretzel Logic and the lead vocal does not sound like Fagan. The lineup credits Michael McDonald and Royce Jones with backing vocals. I'm sure it's not MM so it must be Royce Jones. Does anyone know?
McDonald is on the stage, as he is introduced by name. You are asking who is singing Pretzel Logic, correct?

It sounds like Fagan to me. McDonald is singing the low harmony on the chorus. Listen to the "Band Introduction" track to hear his speaking voice. A bit different as he's a young'un.

*Caution*

Why I remember this show ...

I saw this tour, so I was really surprised to see a good recording of it. Of course, people barely knew who McDonald, Skunk Baxter, and Porcaro were. I'm just assuming they were in the band when I saw them. I remember Fagan played the acoustic grand on some songs.

It was winter 1974 and it was part of the St.Paul Winter Carnival. A triple-bill:

The Pointer Sisters

Steely Dan

Chicago

Of course, I still lived at home and was a part-time dishwasher with a buddy and still in public school. My sister drove me and my little girlfriend to the concert (but I was still cool, so shut up in the peanut gallery  ).

I had the tickets for 4 weeks and had arranged the Saturday night off of work with the bossman. The schedule for the week came out and I was on for Saturday night?!?!?

"Um, I just wanted to remind you that I had arranged Saturday night off, Lou. Remember? It's okay, right?"

"We're busy that night. I've GOT to have you here".

"Uh, okay". :(

I didn't show up. I went to the concert. The next day, I had my buddy call in to Lou and ask for me. I was chicken-shit. :D

"Hi, Lou. Is Prague there".

"He doesn't work here anymore".

Fired. :D But it was worth it, as Steely Dan never toured after that for at least 20 years. And Chicago was definately at the top of their game, too. A great concert.

Damn Prague. In all the years that I've been posting here, that's more than you've ever told us about, well... you. :)

Way to go. :thu:

Thanks, Gas. Sometimes, a boy's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

I think Lou, however, may have felt it was a character flaw on my part. :o

I finally told my dad the story about 2 weeks before he died. He was ill and I thought he could use a good laugh. Well, he already had it figured out it within a week of the occurrence. He figured: girlfriend + concert + kid has no money = FIRED. As was his want, he let me twist in the wind trying to cover my ass. :D

As he knew he would all along, he got the last laugh.

Someone asked about vocals on Pretzel Logic... The Donald sings the most of it but MM comes in on harmony and sings a verse or 1/2 verse midway. I also noticed that many of the tunes were at or real close to tempo as I remember them. There were a few that went to the races and I attribute that to adrenaline of the moment. Or Drummers with a happy trigger finger. :rimshot:

Wow, what a great find. Thank you!

One thing I noticed in My Old School, though, is there is a section completely taken out of the song with the remaining pieces cross-faded between them. Is this the way it downloaded for everyone? Or is the new media player I've been using (VLC) automatically cross-fading around glitches/corrupted data?

It played fine for me with no cross-fades.

To me, the acoustic piano sounds like an electric grand. Does it sound like that to anyone else? AFAIK, doesn't this concert pre-date the electric grand? Perhaps it's just the way it was mic'd.

I was the one who asked about the vocals on Pretzel Logic. It doesn't sound like Fagan to me. I guess it's him. Maybe it's just different enough from the Pretzel Logic CD that it sounds like someone else. I don't know. The part that especially sounds like someone else is the "I stepped upon the platform/The man gave me the news" part. Is that the verse or 1/2 verse that MM sings cause it doesn't sound like MM to me either.

Strange site. Links that don't appear to be open from one place are open from another. For example, I don't think this Tom Waits is on the page with the Steely Dan, but here it is for downloading.

Probably gonna give me bad dreams, however.

Yes that part is definitely MM.

There are a number of concert tapes floating around from various shows on the '74 tour with this lineup. The setlist is pretty similar on all the shows. Fagen definitely used an acoustic piano, and MM was on a Wurli usually. I'm not sure what the synth was, but I'd love to know.

Remember, the band had a "lead" singer on the first album named David Palmer who sang "Dirty Work" and "Brooklyn" in addition to Fagen, who sang on "Reelin" and "Do It Again". On the first tour the made Palmer sing "Do It Again" live and it sounded awful; not pitch-wise, just vibe-wise. He was there at the insistence of the label and Fagen, who was unconfident of his singing. Palmer was gone by the time the '74 tour came around, which is why Royce Jones sings those tunes at this show.

For the true Dan fan, check out the link. This is a geat DVD that this clip was taken from...
