Whaddayaknow. I had one of each for a while in the middle 70s. Maybe you're buying my old gear?

You would have no trouble getting them both in a full size pickup. The Leslie can go in on its back or side, and the Porta-B easily comes apart into two sections and should be no trouble to load (except that it weighs more than you'd think just by looking at it).

Can't address the advisability of buying them now. I was ambivalent about them even when they were in their prime, but they served a purpose. Now I can't say that I'd really want either of them back (at any price, in any condition). But that's just me. Others love those L-series spinets, and those Leslie 760s were darn loud.

The Leslie is probably worth almost that alone. The Porta-B will probably dissapoint. With today's technology in clones, I don't think there are many players who would consider using the Porta-B. Even an old XK-2 would sound and feel superior in my opinion....

Buy it sell the Porta B if you don't like it... as said above the Leslie is worth that.

You could problably get $700-$1000 for the Porta B. That's what they go for around here without a Leslie.

Would I like the 760? I realize its solid state, but is it considered decent? Also, how hard would it be to later obtain say a 122 or 145 amp and swap it in?

I'm supposed to go see it next week sometime, so I'll report back and ask more questions if I find any problems....thanks for all the help.

The 760 has a 9-pin socket, while 122s and 145s have (two somewhat different) 6-pin configurations, so you'd need some adapting to go from one to the other. Hammond specialists can do this pretty easily though, I think.

What I liked about the Leslie 760: (a) plenty of volume with a small stage footprint, good for middle-sized rooms where, for whatever reason, you don't want to mic the Leslie to the PA, and (b) Tolex covering and rubbery edge trim that made it quick and easy to bump around loading in and out.

What I preferred sound-wise was a pair of 122s (or 147s).
