Greg Howe and my home boiler???

You know the theory of "seven degrees of separation"? It goes something like, there are seven steps that link any two people on earth....or something like that!!

So, I get home from work today, and my HVAC guy is doing some work on my home boiler. He and I get to talkin, which we ALWAYS DO, because he's a bass player.....

Turns out that he toured with Greg Howe, in the Howe II band days!! Interestingly, my brother Doug ("velodoug" here, occasionally) has taken a guitar lesson with Greg, although I don't really know much about Greg.

The furnace guy directed me to some vids on youtube with him playing with Howe II.....Here is a link...NOW...This is not my cup of tea, but you can see it's late '80 shred stuff...But, Vern can play!! Vern is the guy on the left, with the long blond hair.....this first vid is VERY 80'S...kind of shred meets David Lee Roth!!;

Now, before you ex-communicate me!! ( ;) :grin:), check out a couple more vids of very recent Greg Howe. Vern is obviously not touring with Greg anymore. But, check out how Howe's playing has evolved. And, check out Dennis Chambers drumming...WOW!! :thu:

Excommunicate??? Why on earth would you be ex-communicated?? Certainly a bunch of guitarists (this forum) can appreciate the level of skill in these videos and see past their own likes and/or dislikes... no?

I actually haven't heard this album. Putting it in its historic perspective, the folks that were Greg's fans were diehards... into Satriani, Yngwie, Vai's solo stuff, Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, etc. So, when Greg's 2nd effort had vocals and more of a pop-metal bias, many of his fans felt shunned. After reading this review on allmusic.com (http://tinyurl.com/2hrxkq) maybe we should have given this one a listen after all.

That is Greg's brother Al singing. Instrumentally, these guys have it going on. I think perhaps it was still a little too busy, too fast, and not pop enough to make a mark like Paul Gilbert did when he teamed up with Billy Sheehan and did the Mr. Big albums. In its time, though, this really is pretty impressive effort for this genre of music (IMHO).

Although, with "Appetite for Destruction" already out of the gate and "Nevermind" around the corner, maybe this is all a moot point after all.

I saw Howe II around '89 in Huntington Beach. They got almost zero response from the audience...I felt bad for the band. The band had a look of "Why are we here" on their faces. :eek:

They were really great technically, but the songs weren't very memorable.
