b3_john
I see the latest Gibson guitar of the week (link) has a pair of H-90 PUPs, described as: H-90 pickups: 2 high-power, single coil P-90 pickups stacked on top of one another. These are unbeatable for punchy, defined-yet-dirty tone. Anyone have any real-world experience with these? Are these Gibson's answer to noiseless singlecoils? More importantly, are they drop-in replacements for P-90s? And are they available separately? I played an SG w/ P-90s a couple of weeks ago that would be really sweet if I could get that same (or close to the same) P-90 punch but without the dreaded hum when I'm not playing. Enquiring minds want to know! John GP sacred cow of the year: Jimmy Vaughan
fantasticsound
Can't tell you, but the previous Gibson attempt at a humbucking P-90 type p'up, the P-100 was absolutely awful. No P-90 character. In fact they were possibly the most lifeless p'ups I ever played. I'd like to hear the H-90's if only to see if they found a way to provide what the P-100's were supposed to provide.. a quiet P-90 p'up. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. fantasticsound
BTW - According to the Gibson website they are not available for aftermarket purchase. Everything Gibson sells aftermarket is made in Elgin, IL. They do not use p'ups made in Elgin as OEM on the line and vice versa. The only P-90 types currently available are P-90's and P-94's (A P-90 designed to drop in to a guitar routed for a humbucker.) It's easiest to find me on Facebook.
