Zuben
I really haven't noticed a difference in 40 years. My Strats tend to be Rosewood, my tele is maple, not much choice with Martin and if you have ebony, ivory should get equal billing. Billster
I'm definitely rosewood/ebony. I never liked the lacquered maple. Buy my CD on CD Baby! Bill Hartzell - the website MySpace?!?!
Bluesape
Ebony is normally the first choice. Aesthetically, the maple looks right to my eyes on Fenders and the models they've inspired, and feels great. Tonally, ebony may have an edge. Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Sometimes never!

miroslav
Let's not forget composites. Graphite feels and looks great. Yeah...the two new Hagstrom reissues I recently bought have the new Hagstrom "Resinator" fretboard. Resinator Fretboard Yet another Hagstrom exclusive, the Resinator Fretboard is an extraordinary, homogeneous wood composite that maintains a strong fundamental harmonic and eliminates wolf tones. Resinator Fretboards offer the articulate sound of high quality ebony but with more consistency and durability. Silky smooth, reliable, and fast, the Hagstrom neck is a guitarists dream come true. It's a very hard fretboard and it makes the strings really sing out with a nice bite. It is relatively non-porous. miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
Chad Thorne
My electrics, a Strat and a Tele, have maple, which I prefer. My acoustics both have rosewood, though I had a D-28 once with ebony and liked it. I always wanted to build a Tele with an ebony fingerboard. Strategery
I've got 2 great Am Strats. One has rosewood and the other maple. They're 2 guitars used for different purposes and needs. On my Gretsch Nashville, I have ebony and I REALLY love that neck and Ebony wood in general. Personally, for my Strats, maple tends to be my favorite, but after that...it's ebony all the way. It's so smooth and has a great snap to it. Randy "Just play!"
Scott Fraser
Let's not forget composites. Graphite feels and looks great. Yeah. One of my Steinberger clones has a graphite fretboard & it feels great & gives a very nice even, balanced tone through a set of single coil EMGs.
