YEEEEEEE - HAAAAAAAA!! :rawk::thu:

Yes, I'm a guitar player, but quite a few years back I took up banjo as well.

I LOVE BLUEGRASS!! :)

I don't know what it is about it...but it ain't no sport for wimps.

Yes, I play a little keyboards too but mainly I'm a guitar player.

I like to mix it up. I even like German OktoberFest music.

So do we have any other Bluegrass pickers out there?

I lived in Louisville, Kentucky for almost 9 years...college, worked for a year, then med school. I spent many a night sippin real live moonshine, and trying to sound like a bluegrass picker with my buddies...we used to play in this guy's Dad's log cabin...no running water, but we had some GREAT players...banjo, mando, bass played on a big wash tub with a broom handle and rope!!!

I have felt that many of the best musicians I've seen live were bluegrass players. And, Bluegrass is a very democratic genre....every player gets a chance to step out and play some solo!!!

I do not consider myself a bluegrass player....but I really enjoy bluegrass music.

There are some great sounds in bluegrass, and some great players. I could never play like that for more than 5 minutes before I went off into some blues and syncopated rhythms though. I've been to a few bluegrass jams but just tend to go off pretty quickly, its to limiting for me as a player. Don't get me wrong, I respect the musicians, but my attention span just doesn't let me get into the music that much.

Let's scrubb one off boys!

Yep, when I play banjo....I can't drink a drop of any alcohol.

It's so demanding timeing wise, that one beer will throw me off time.

It's a right hand thang for sure.

When I was single, I'd get off work on a friday, grab a shower, fill up a cooler, and go jam with these old timers from about 7-10pm.

Man, we would go at it big time!

There was a great fiddle player there, mandolin, guitar player, and stand up bass.

I was the banjo player because the other one had quit.

I was no badass but I could make it sound good.

Around 10pm, I'd pack it up they'd get all pissed wanting to keep playing.

I'd tell them....remember when you were young?

I'm going to chase women.

I listen to bluegrass from time to time. I have composed some bluegrass type music that I never recorded. It is all major, pretty simple. It isn't like blues in the sense that it is mostly major and you also work aroudn the chords more.

I am no expert on it, I just remember turning on my digital cable one night and leaving a bluegrass music channel (audio) on for 15 hours and listening while I did other stuff. I noticed some trends for sure. Anyways, then I wrote a version that kind of employed the stuff I was hearing. I didn't record it cuz my band would probably hit me over the head with a shovel, and then say "I done busted his melon"

I really like bluegrass too, though not with the fiddle.

I also really love "old time" music such as the Carter Family and (especially) the Blue Sky Boys. You really have to take a deep breath and relax before listening to any of it, because it's music from a long time ago, and much slower than what we hear today... but is it good or what?

They should write more songs about train wrecks, murdered lovers and saintly old mothers. :)

Kinda sorta. I took up mandolin a couple of years ago, and bluegrass just seems to be what come out of it. For me, especially, there's a nexus because there are so many great bluegrass gospel tunes. For a guy like myself who loves acoustic music but doesn't care for most Contemporary Christian music, bluegrass is the solution.

Funny, though I play fiddle, too, what wants to come out of it is Celtic music.

I particularly like Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs, and Doc Watson. I guess I could throw David Bromberg in here to. He's great.

And, if you like bluegrass, DON'T MISS Iris DeMent....she's an amazing singer.

I like anything that's well-played and shows a certain amount of musicianship. I've enjoyed Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Hot Rize, of course Flatt & Scruggs from the old days, and some others in that vein. But I really like Dawg Music; Tony Rice, David Grisman, Darell Anger, folks like that. Bluegrass Jazz, I'd call it.

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

As a mandolin student, I have learned some of it. I wouldn't mind playing in a bluegrass band for a while, but it's certainly not my ONLY interest!

But what the hell, some bluegrass guys play their cabooses off, no question about it!

Old time bluegrass... I have to be in the mood for it. Some of the vocals are a little hard to listen to. Then again, at times the vocal harmonies are gorgeous! Depends on the artists!

Allison Kraus and her band KICK ASS TOO! :)

I'm telling you, some bluegrass songs HAUL ASS! GEEZ!

Some of those songs you just have to jump in where you can and hang on.

I really like some of the NEWGRASS out there.

It's Bluegrass with a modern flair and more cool words.

What's the name of that bluegrass band that does AC/DC songs?

Man, they crack me the hell up!

I've heard some other bluegrass bands doing metal songs too.

You should here one doing "You got another thing comin" by Judas Priest. OMG....MWahahahahahahaha

Anyway, bluegrass makes me grin from ear to ear whether I'm listening to it live, on CD, or playing it.

It's just fun. :)

Well, I haven't really played bluegrass much, Randy, but I love listening to it and have worked with a lot of bluegrass pickers in Nashville.

My first job here was mixing 6 days a week at Opryland USA themepark in the mid-1990's for super-picker, comedian and Opry Star, Mike Snider. It was amazing mixing three shows a day for Snider, Charlie Cushman (another fantastic banjo player, but rhythm guitar most of the time in Snider's band, grew up playing "Earl Scruggs" in Lester Flatt's band with Marty Stuart on mandolin. Still plays in Marty's bluegrass band.), mandolin champion Bobby Clark (grew up pickin' mandolin in bands with Vince Gill in Oklahoma) and Blake Williams on bass. (He played banjo with Bill Monroe for 10 years before Snider convinced him to play bass in the band. He couldn't play bass. For 6 months he stood behind Snider pretending to play until he figured it out.)

I love being at the Full Moon Pickin' Party at Edwin Warner Park in Nashville. Hundreds of players show up on Fridays nearest the full moon each month in summer. There are multiple pulls going on around the stable area in the park. The fees paid by listeners help fund the park services but musicians with an instrument get in free. :thu:

I also had the opportunity to barbeque with Stuart Duncan who plays in the Nashville Bluegrass Band in addition to thousands of credits on country and bluegrass records, at his dad's home. Like most bluegrassers he's a really nice guy, to boot.

It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman

Hey Neil,

Bluegrass, folk, some acoustic country....IT'S ALL GOOD. :)

You kicked ass on acoustic when you were down in Columbus, and that's just from that little bit I heard you play.
