Finale
ProfD, thanks but you're making me  I really enjoy your great insights too here. Also, I think you should participate in the next KC Comp, it's true that there are many gifted players here and I'm sure you're one of them too. Back to the original TV program. DafDuc
Artists I never got include: Genesis (old) Styx Wakeman Rory Gallagher Robbie Robertson (solo) TranSiberian Orchestra Rush G Dead Artists I truly loathe: REO Kenny Gee Burton Cummings (there's also some overexposure with Bob Seger, but this is Detroit - it's not so much loathing as overfamiliarity) Lousy members of good bands: Dickie Betts - Allmans Gregg Rolie - Santana Lee Jackson - Nice And this clarification, especially for the younger set - Green Manalishi era Fleetwod Mac is a far cry from the band that did Rumors. Peter Green was absolutely awesome. Check out Oh Well (not the Live With Lindsay version!), Rattlesnake Shake, Shake Your Money Maker, Albatross - and of course Green Manalishi, the best heavy hard rock song ever written. Show of hands - how many of you thought that was a Judas Priest original? Well? Daf (also liked Bare Trees, despite the personnel changes) I played in an 8 piece horn band. We would often get bored. Not sure that I have a gift for anything other than gab. I hope to a) get my musical mojo back and b) not sell everything; giving up playing in order to focus solely on talking about music. If so, I hope to make the cut in time for the next KC comp. Thanks mayne. PD "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."--E. DanS
Artists I never got include: Genesis (old) Well if you didn't like Trick Of The Tail & Wind & Wuthering, you REALLY didn't get it. b3_john
I like a lot of what people here seem to dislike. I guess that makes me overrated too. Lousy members of good bands: Gregg Rolie - Santana Then why did the great rock stuff dry up after Gregg left Santana the Band (and it became Carlos, his ego-feeding guru, and a perpetual revolving door of other guys)? If you really want to know who was musically overrated in that group you pretty much can do that with this section of songs from The Very Best of Carlos Santana: Open InvitationHold OnWinningAll I Ever WantedDance Sister DanceI challenge anyone here to listen to that tripe in a single sitting without throwing up at least once. b3_john
Then again, Liz Reed (At Fillmore East) and Jessica (Brothers & Sisters) are my two all-time favorite instrumental rock tunes -- Mr. Betts' current situation not withstanding. Legatoboy
Wayne Newton, oh man, I saw his show in Vegas in 77'. . . . Talk about 'lounge lizard' central . . . they ate it up. . . If Linwood did a Vegas show, I'd bet you he'd draw! Linwood this is what you have to do: First Wayne sang, then he danced, then they threw him a 'Gitar' from the wings, then he sang w/the gitar some more.... Then they threw him a Fiddle from the wings and he played it. .then a horn (trumpet I think) . .it was hilarious! It was like a rerun of Ted Mack's amatur hour all rolled up into one guy in a cheesy slicked hairdo and moustache! The instruments flying out from the stage sides. . . . priceless Americana, Vaudavillian! Fear and Loathing in Wayne Newton. . . Legatoboy
I have the inside story on Dickey, though I wasn't there then... KKB (my old/sometimes current band) opened for them (Great Southern/ Dickey Betts Band?) on 2 tours of CA for 2 months each tour........ I ain't talking but things have been made very clear to me! NYKeys
I also think John Legend is a little overrated. It seems like everything they play is in the same key, vibe, and flow. kanker.
I don't particularly care for Alicia Keys. Sure, she sings well, and plays well, but to my ears, all her songs sound alike.Well what do you expect - she did a whole album of songs in A minor. When she was featured on the cover of Keyboard, the magazine's credibility dipped considerably in my eyes. A ROMpler is just a polyphonic turntable. John Guess that's what makes horse racing. Rolie left and they put out Welcome, my favorite album by any group ever. And Dance Sister Dance is an awesome tune - not as fond of the other 4 you list. Rolie was an early influence for me, he got great sounds from his B-3, his use of paradiddles was great, and he structured his solos really well. But he never stretched out, and sorta made me doubt he could. What was so cool about Welcome is all of a sudden there were two keyboardists who could totally kick ass. Kermode's Rhodes work was suprelmely tasty, and Coster did some very cool organ stuff. For me, Santana was to Rolie as Coltrane was to Flanagan... and Coster and Kermode were his Tyner. I'll also admit I forgot to consider Dickie' writing - love Elizabeth Reed. Just wish he'd develop his solos - only Dave Mason's and Gary Richrath's annoy me more. Daf I played in an 8 piece horn band. We would often get bored. So...three words: "Tower of Polka." - Calumet

Over-rated? The Rolling Stones. If they'd have been black they would have had to have been twice the musicians they were/are to get a gig at the local. And any chick singer who does the where's my note it's one of these around here somewhere can't sing a melody without screwing with it Whitney-Mariah-Christine thing. Bosendorphen
Have to agree with Prince. Read some article where the lack of bass in "When Doves Cry" was described as "revolutionary." WTFresca? Some music critics. I felt he was a good pop songwriter and talent performer but I guess didn't feel these depictions of "genius" were warranted. Never understood the appeal of REM and how they were so great. Mediocre at best IMHO. Not impressed with them live either. Nor with U2. Agree though about Genesis' ToTT/WaW period. Love it! Tony Banks was so dominant on WaW. [curmudgeon mode] Why son, keyboardists could rule back in THOSE days! [/curmudgeon mode].
