Overrated artists

I was listening to the Beatles today and it struck me that as a group, those boys were amazing. Each of them subsequently went on to carve out relatively successful solo careers which did little to undermine their status as first-rate artists. But - and here's where I'm wading into flame-infested waters - it's struck me again how underwhelmed I am at John Lennon's solo output compared to his work in the Beatles; in comparison, I really admire Paul McCartney and George Harrison's later solo stuff.

Anyone else have artists they think are ever so slightly overrated to some extent?

I actually am underwhelmed by Paul's output, but thought John's was pretty solid, and George's was the best of them all. We won't talk about Ringo.

Artists I will never understand the appeal of

Bob Dylan

Elvis Costello

U2

Sting

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Pretty much any College/Alternative rock act, especially the ones from the 'glory days' of alt rock.

Stevie Ray Vaughn

The Allman Brothers

The list goes on but this is all I can come up with off the top of my head.

I don't just find them to be overrated, but I find much of there work to be vacant.

Tom Petty... way overrated IMO

What can this strange device be?

When I touch it, it gives forth a sound

It's got wires that vibrate, and give music

What can this thing be that I found?

Live At The Fillmore has to be one of the greated slide guitar/rock blues album ever recorded. Plus Greg does some really nice Hammond work on it.

If I want slide guitar, I'll listen to Charley Patton. ;) I understand that lots of folks like the Alman's, I've just never been able to understand the appeal. Different strokes.

Good lord.

Kanker, Greg Allman is actually doing some really cool stuff on the Hammond. Especially in the early days. Okay, I'm a little biased because our current bassist in Root Doctor is the little brother of Lamar Williams, but the Allman Bros. are a remarkably deep band, musically.

Take another listen! :D

I wouldn't call them overrated as they're acclaimed by many and I wouldn't necessarily say it was anything but my own taste but some major bands I never got included:

U2

The Who

Genesis

Pink Floyd

Elton John (yes I understand the appeal - just not my cup of tea)

I agree with most of kanker's except

I respected the Allmans (though I never got into them)

Stevie Ray was very good at what he did

Sting (great writer, some dull records)

Dylan (would have functioned OK as a poet)

Costello (I can't stand but I'm sure he's good)

Red Hot Chilli Peppers, nope, love them!

So actually not much agreement!

Believe me I have. It just sounds like a bunch of meandering a lot of the time to me, and the songs just don't speak to me. Give me Skynryrd any day of the week.

- Santana

- Rolling Stones

- Norah Jones

+1 on Nora Jones

Although most people love her, I am going to add Diana Krall to the list.

Her fast stuff is cool, but her slow stuff puts me in a Kenny G. Frame of mind.....ZZZzzzz ZZZzzzz ZZZzzz

Has anyone mentioned Clapton? I've never understood why he has "guitar god" status. Great singer, good songwriter, pretty good guitar player, but that's all.

As for Elvis Costello...the lyrics and songwriting always hit a chord with me. I don't think he ever intended to be a bang up musician or singer, but for what he does I think he's great.

I gotta get this off my chest, and sorry if it offends anybody.

My most overrated artist of all time:

Prince

I never understood the appeal. I remember acquaintances back in the 80s saying he was a "true visionary" and "true innovator". Huh? Lukewarm James Brown and Rick James ripoffs, where is the innovation?
