DC Ross
I'm finally ready to move up to a new cab from an Ampeg SVT-410HLF. At 110 pounds, it's taking its toll on my back. I'm looking at the Epifani cabs & trying to figure out the best route to go. I play rock almost exclusively: soft, melodic stuff to heavy grindy riff rock. I make judicious use of the low B of my Dingwall ABII (through an SWR 750X). Any suggestions? I'm heading to BassNW on Friday to check stuff out, but I'm hoping for some feedback before then Thanks! -DCR It's not simple to be simple. -H. ...
I rather fancy the UL-410 that I just purchased however the UL-310 also sounds quite nice. The only potential weirdness with the 310 is it's 5.3 Ohm load. You might also want to consider a UL-212. They are quite tasty and are cheaper than the 410. DC Ross
Thanks Bump, I'll give the 212 a go as well. I just saw your new toys in the thread you posted, very nice! How do you like that 212 on its own? What made you decide on the 410 + 212 combination vs. other configurations? Were there other lightweight cabs that you were considering? RE: The 5.3 Ohm load: If I went with the 310 and decided to add an 8 Ohm cab later, that'd put me at about 3.2 Ohms. I think that's within the limits of the 750x. Another option is the 210 + 115, but I think that's way out of my budget -- $700 more than the 310. Thanks! It's not simple to be simple. -H. ...
If I was going to buy just one of the two cabs I have I'd most likely wind up with the UL-410; but on another day of the week there's a chance I'd wind up with just the UL-212. The most noticable difference between the two is their mid-range voicing. Placed next to each other the 410 sounds like it has a slight 'disco smile' EQ curve applied to it - the mids are scooped out just a bit. The 410 may also have a slightly better lowend response but it's really difficult to tell since there is already the mid scoop going on - it may just be an audio trick that my ears are playing. Have you ever played an Ampeg SVT 810E right next to the SVT 215E? It's like the difference between those cabs but less pronounced. The really interesting thing is how well the two cabs compliment one another. I would wager that two of either cab would not sound as good as one of each does. 4 of these cabs would likely be able to hang with Disaster Area. The 5.3 Ohm cab + an 8 Ohm cab would be rollin' with 3.19 Ohms... or 3.187969924812030075187969924812 Ohms if you want to be really precise. Good luck on your quest! Let me know when you're heading down there tomorrow and I may stop by as well. I need to bring one of my Goliath III's in so they can sell it for me. DC Ross
Decided on selling a Goliath, huh? I'm going to try to get there around noon musician time. So probably 12:30... It's not simple to be simple. -H. Matisse Ross Precision Guitars
