S. Yeti Bigfoot, Esq.
Movie Theatres have been using subliminal advertising for years, by flashing photos on the screen of popcorn, soft drinks, etc. during the movie. According to studies they did years ago, it works surprisingly well. The photos are too quick to consciously recognize, but your subconscious picks up on it. I met a subliminal advertising executive once.... but just for a second. "And so I definitely, when I have a daughter, I have a lot of good advice for her." ~Paris Hilton BWAAAHAAAHAAHAAA!!! Eric Iverson
I remember back in the '70s when there were people very upset about supposed "Satanic backwards messages" in rock records, which few people could hear anyway, unless they wanted to wire the phonograph to run backwards, or tape it on a reel to reel... If they wanted to worry about rock lyrics, there were a few FORWARD messages there... TOTALLY IRRELEVANT OF COURSE!!
A String
We used to just turn our turntables backwards. but as you pointed out, the forward message was pretty much the same thing. Not point in going to all the trouble of putting it in backwards. I don't think there were any messages. I think it was the same crowd that wanted to ban "Kiss" and video games, looking for something else to give us a hard time over. Megiliel
Very true. And really, I don't honestly think that backwards messages will make people do or think "bad" things- it's too jumbled up to comprehend, and if it's backwards, wouldn't it make you do the opposite anyways? Just a theory. Oh, by the way, the backwards version of "Helena" by My Chemical Romance is very funny. www.myspace.com/donahelena Support bored teenage ghost hunters. www.myspace.com/rock_paranormal
GuitarPlayerFL
this isn't subliminal just backwards but I always thought it was cool They forgot about the intro to Evil Woman too...same type thing. There, Jeff sings, "There's a mighty waterfall, there's a mighty waterfall". We did this 20 years ago with our turntables. A Jazz/Chord Melody Master-my former instructor www.robertconti.com (FKA GuitarPlayerSoCal)
Steevo
I remember being intrigued by the whole subliminal message thing back in college. The 'guru' of that stuff is (was?) Wilson Brian Key and I heard him give a lecture once. I don't really subscribe to it one way or another, but the topic did make for some interesting chit chat back in the day. Here's a link that I just googled up, ... along the lines of the Wilson Key stuff. Subliminal Info Link Mainly related to print advertising instead of audio but same concept. Most of it seems kind of wacky and some is not for the kids. You be da judge! S.

Eric Iverson
Yes, there are all kinds of messages out there, subliminal and otherwise. Sometimes I think I'd like to go to a desert island with just my guitar and mandolin for a few months... OK, maybe give my wife visiting privileges, provided she promises not to tell me about the last news on TV.. and not to deliver me any subliminal messages. But anybody who knows Janeth knows she's not terribly shy about the NON-subliminal ones! (Very sweet lady overall, really, just outspoken!) Could I survive without this forum? Well, it would be tough, but I managed to do so before I found it.... Could I survive without the latest tidbits about Paris Hilton and J Lo? Well, anything is possible.... especially if you give them to me BACKWARDS.

Eric Iverson
What brought that on? Actually, yes, Sam Bush does a great job with slide mandolin! His album with David Grisman, "Hold On We're Strummin'" has some great examples of it! I might could be persuaded to tape it for you, Lee, if you were interested, but you'd have to send me a backwards message or 2.... nothing too sinister, please, I have a weak heart! Kramer Ferrington III.
Movie theaters are no longer allowed to use subliminal messages. Peace Yeah, well... they don't HAVE to, really. Advertising has come a long way since then. Product placement in the films themselves is apparently a pretty big industry. Not that it helps your local cinema sell the popcorn, of course. Eric Iverson
Local cinemas seem to still sell plenty of popcorn! And advertising people are past masters of motivation... which is their job, of course. Whether it's MY job to believe all that BS... like having a new car will make me sexier, or something... is another question!

I don't remember the song, but it sounds like incoherent mumbling forwards and backwards it's like "Paulie is bloody". Well, yeah... but the Beatles were into doing all that sort of thing just for the hell of it. Apparently there are some really high pitched sounds in Sgt. Pepper's that only dogs can hear, and they were put there "just to annoy your dog", as John Lennon put it. Sure, the Beatles had their darker side (witness the Butchered Babies cover) but I doubt they were part of some sort of conspiracy. I mean, if YOU could have backwards stuff in your records... why not? Band MySpace My snazzy t-shirt empire
