Michael Patrick
Played for about 500 of my closest friends... Today was Employee Appreciation Day at work. On Friday, an email went around saying they were looking for a lead guitarist to play at this event. I sent a reply, and got hooked up with a drummer and bass player who work there as well (and who I hadn't met before...). We came up with a set of blues tunes, and played them with no rehearsal. And totally rocked the house! Both the bass player and the drummer were good players, and followed me as I went into "Sunshine of Your Love" and "Third Stone from the Sun" in the middle of the Buddy Miles tune "Them Changes." The Governor showed up on cue right at the end, and he complimented me on my playing. I even saw him doing a little dance as we were finishing up. I also got to lobby the Governor about the struggle we have trying to get services for our three-year old daughter who has autism. He had included a provision in the state budget to improve services, but it got taken out by the legislature. I asked for his support for the provision as stand-alone legislation, and he said he definitely supports it. All in all, a great day.... And I wouldn't make you read through all of that without the payoff of some gear porn... Michael Patrick
It's one of those thin-skin '62 reissues that Dave's Guitar Shop has. This was actually the first time I've had it out of the house for a gig.... fantasticsound
Cool little gig, Michael. Even cooler you were able to lobby the Gov. on behalf of your child and those like her whose needs are greater than the services provided. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Michael Patrick
Yeah, I'm not shy about buttonholing my elected officials, especially when it involves trying to help our little sweetie and others like her. I haven't agreed with this Governor on some things, but he has done a couple things lately to try to improve autism services. Just the other day I saw a public service announcement trying to raise awareness about autism that had members of Kiss, Aerosmith, and a bunch of other bands. Totally cool!! Sauce
That's awesome Michael, glad the gig went well. I see you used your mystery head for it too. Hah I'm beginning to notice a direct correlation, the more pictures you post of your gear the more jealous I get. How do you like the MI Blues pro? I've been looking at getting one myself. And good luck with things with your daughter, I hope she gets the support she needs. I've spent my past two summers working with kids with disabilities and this summer I'm actually working at a special ed school. It's incredibly rewarding work. Then you'll never hear surf music again...
Gifthorse
Nice dude. Hey were you dummy loading the head with your custom built thing as a pre? Good to hear you could talk to someone who could make a diff in your daughter's life. Autism is a big problem. I worked with autistic kids in college in this music program. Hasn't it been increasing? http://flagshipmile.dmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/gifthorse
MILLO
Wow. That rig is simply absolutely impressive. I noticed you have some Marshall clone heads, etc. Is that one your favorite? How are the Mojaves? I was going to ask the same question Gifthorse asked--were you only using that Leftec power section, or the other way around? Cool about your lobbying, too. Good luck to you and your family. It'll get into fuzz territory (at least the newer version with the "fuzz" switch), although it can sag pretty bad if you max the gain in the fuzz mode. I use it for a medium gain overdrive, and it works great for that. Cool on you for working with special needs kids! The mystery amp was there only as a spare. I ALWAYS bring two amps to a gig, just in case... The blond Leftee head (a JTM45 clone) was what I was using. I had the Hotplate hooked up, but since we were outside I was able to set it at 0 db, which essentially bypasses it. I don't know if the number of kids with autism is increasing, I think it has more to do with a change in diagnostic criteria with the latest edition of the DSM, plus better screening, plus more awareness of it and less stigma. I'm not a scientist, so that's just my opinion based on what I've read... I think the increased awareness of it is great, it can only help us to help kids and adults who are struggling with autism. It had nicer transformers and some other upgraded parts compared to the kit that the Leftee amp was built from. It was a sweet amp, but I sold it for economic reasons.... picker
So you had the crowd in for a noontime quickie, it got into an all-out jam, and then the governor showed up, eh? Must have been interesting... And being a guitar player, I couldn't refuse anything that would make me louder... Actually, my amp was only 35 watts, so I appreciated having a little extra help.
