Dave Horne
There was a line in a play by Paddy Chayevsky something like a man who likes all kinds of music, likes none. If everything is art, then nothing is art. I have a difficult time accepting something as art, especially outside of music, if it looks like I could easily recreate it. But on the other hand, standards have dropped so low over the years that it's easy to lose one's perspective. No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message. In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.
synthizen2
Art is human thought, feelings and emotions - frozen in time (i.e., recorded). Art is the struggle to maintain form over time & erosion. iLaw
Art is human thought, feelings and emotions - frozen in time (i.e., recorded)... That's poetic, but come on, the recorded voice that tells me to "press 1 if you would like your account balance" is "human thought ... frozen in time." Is that art? Larry. jay da cop
I think too many people are trying to tell the "sheeple" of the world what art is, and too many idiots are buying into it. What happened to thinking for ourselves!? Take famous people. For the most part, WHO REALLY CARES what they had for breakfast this morning, or (pick your topic). Art is the same way sometimes, I think. This is one of the most subjective things known to man, yet we too often abdicate the right to decide for ourselves what is art, or appealing to us, and let some other person, with their own perceptions, agendas, ideals, experiences, tastes... decide for us. What kind of moron lets someone else decide for them what should deserve their attention anyway!? Jay

NYKeys
One Man's Garbage, is another's masterpiece. ART IMOH are ideas and images that are created in ones mind and expressed in many forms. The form everyone here uses is our instruments. Everyone has Art, but only unique individuals become Artist. iLaw
"Good" arguably may be in the eye of the beholder, but "Art" is not. We use this noun every day, and 99.999% of the time we understand each other perfectly. Surely we must be implicitly agreeing on what we're talking about. Let's try another definition. Ken Lansing (taught art education at U of Illinois for years) circulated this one a few years ago: "... the skillful presentation of concepts and/or emotions (ideas and feelings) in a form that is structurally (compositionally) satisfying and coherent." Any better? Anybody (besides me) want to disagree with Ken on whether art must be skillfully presented or sufficiently "satisfying"? For example, in another thread I just took a potshot at the Plastic Ono Band who, in my opinion, neither skillfully nor satisfyingly presented their ideas and feelings. Yet I have no trouble calling it art. Larry.
delirium
all this is bulls*it... there is no ART or artists as well as there are no colors, no chords and scales. ProfD
Everyone has Art, but only unique individuals become Artist. In order to elevate yourself from a musician to an artist, a few things to consider: 1. Paint yourself 2. Be quiet and moody 3. Write all songs in ONE key 4. Give them titles that begin with that key 5. Come up with BS stories about how the tunes originated 6. Live in Roswell NM; claim cosmic dust and alien inspiration 7. Insist on a certain keyboard by make and model 8. Use one mode of transportation to and from gigs 9. Schedule all performances for specific days and times 10. Join a cult or religion These are just a few tips to get started in becoming an artist. PD "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."--E. Well, wouldn't that depend on whether the recorded voice instruction is "thoughts, feelings and emotions" or just a voice? I doubt the person who did the voice recording was pouring much emotion into it. Kurzweil PC3, Yamaha MOX8, Alesis Ion, Kawai K3M
Ed Coury
What is "it"? Why do birds suddenly appear, every time you walk near? Why does love have to hurt so bad? Who are you? (who-who, who-who?) What are you doing the rest of my life? Which way is up? Where is the love? What's your name? When will I be loved? "Oh yeah, I've got two hands here." (Viv Savage) "Mr. Blu... Flexby
Perfect Form Art, like beauty, is subjective, however To me it seems that both are closely linked to perfection (mathematical precision, harmony, symmetry) The laws of nature, math, skills, dedication and so on come to mind. Universal Expression Art should not merely be an expression of the artist himself, but an expression of Mankind as a whole. Paradoxical this can only be achieved when the expression is deeply personal (Ich habe genug) and, at the same time, totally detached from ego (To God alone be all the glory) When Perfect Form and Universal Expression come together, a work of art emerges. Everything in-between is also art, but will be forgotten when we are gone.
j_fizzl
Since Pollock and Duchamp, Kandinsky etc. you can't distinguish between art and not art...the only categories now are the relative categories of "good art" and "bad art". Now, good art is piss christs and elephant shit Madonna and childs...bad art is Monet flowers.:]
