To one that has been in my family longer than I have...my upright piano. yip, moving, and just don't have the space for it. That and it needs the hammers on 4 keys rebuilt and some major tuning. Anyone know the best way to get rid of or give away a piano without having to pay a fortune for pros to come in (I live on the 3rd floor with 90 degree stairs and no elevator, and DO NOT want to carry it again). Hmm is that tax deductable?

You might be able to donate it to a Church. Most churches have pianos these days (instead of organs) and even if they have a more expensive piano in the main part of their church, sometime then can use one in another room or "downstairs" in a meeting room.

If you give it away, it will be the new guys problem on how it get it outta there.

When I moved from my last house, I sold my family upright before I left. The woman who bought went on the cheap and hired 3 teens to move it. Miraculously it didn't damage my entry way as my wife said they all but dropped it down the landing stairs. Too much for 'em. Probably never moved one before.

Mike, I was thinking along those lines. Just not sure if anyone has some feedback on similar attempts. However, yes it would be funny as hell to drop it from the 3rd floor onto the pavement :) Since I really have no need for it (thanks to my new XS)I'd at least like someone else to have it and keep the music going.

I remember when a local family just bought an upright piano and it fell off his trailer as he was taking it home. The piano disintegrated on impact and there were piano parts all over the road.

The former owner happened to be driving that direction and when he saw what happened he laughed so hard that he gave the money back to him.

We moved a piano into a basement apartment in college, it took several hours and some carpentry work.

We moved it back out through the window a semester later. In pieces.

If you drop it out the window be sure to have someone on the ground with a recording device to record the sound it makes when it hits the pavement. That could be useful to use in a song sometime in the future.

No! The last thing we need is a another orchestra hit. ;)

It's not a cheapo, was a very good Winter Upright piano. Prob is that its 55 years old and needs some repairs (which are harder to do on old pianos). With me living in a condo I really wont have a need for an extremely loud and heavy accoustic instrument. So if anyone in the Boston area wants to come grab it, feel free :P

There was a business that bought mine for $100-200 and came and got it. Adios old friend. Maybe there's such a thing in your area. Otherwise, give it away on the stipulation that they have to come get it.

I've known of some piano teachers that sell their piano when they move and buy another one when they get to the new town. They seem to think that was better than trying to move it. Put in the ad that they have to move it so those who contact you are (hopefully) prepared.

Call some piano movers and ask if they know anyone that wants it. My dad used to restore old uprights and he would constantly get them for the cost of moving from the movers (due to people like you who just want to get rid of them), fix them up, and sell them for good money. It's how he raised 7 kids.

In the same vein, call some local piano tuners and ask if they want it. Please don't destroy it or let someone move it who has no experience.

Oh rest assured it will not be destroyed. This is the instrument that got me started in music, and if I don't keep it I at least want it to be an inspiration for someone else. At this point I haven't been able to get myself to post it on craigslist, but I keep loggin in as if I will....
