Eric Iverson
A question to the younger crowd here: Is it still considered politically correct for rock musicians to trash hotel rooms... or is it considered "old school"??
revolead
A question to the younger crowd here: Is it still considered politically correct for rock musicians to trash hotel rooms... or is it considered "old school"?? I'm not sure its politically correct or even politically incorrect for anyone to trash anything anymore. These days, in some ways, people have more respect for property rights than they used to, and in some ways they don't. Also, these days technology and the advance of capitalism has allowed bands who aren't superstars to afford nicer tour buses, etc., so I'm not even sure most bands spend time in hotel rooms anymore. Why would you when your bus has everything you need? Shut up and play.

Big Red 67
I played with a drummer that was like him when I was a kid. I miss that guy!!!! I can still remember him talking about stroking his "big black pussy" with a lisp. It was a cat just so you know. God I miss that guy. fantasticsound
...Also, these days technology and the advance of capitalism has allowed bands who aren't superstars to afford nicer tour buses, etc., so I'm not even sure most bands spend time in hotel rooms anymore. Why would you when your bus has everything you need? You've never lived on a tour bus, have you?? Tour bus living can be very swank if you have the money, but it still doesn't compare to having the room to stretch out in a nice hotel. No star with any money stays in the bus if they can help it. In addition to room to stretch out, you can hit the pool and other ammenities easily whereas stepping off the bus is a major debacle once the fans know you're there. Remember, the crew has to be onsite all day but the musicians and artist rarely need be on site until soundcheck. For lesser known acts the band usually sets up their own equipment, so only the artist gets extra time to relax, with runners driving them to and from the venue. But to the original question.. I think two things have changed since those days. Hotels have become far more respectful of their properties. They realize that no star destroying rooms and causing irritation to other patrons is worth losing conventions that bring in many more dollars than the rooms and prestige of hosting a star ever will. Even a big star might bring in 20 room nights over a few days for themselves and entourage. A 4 day convention in the same hotel will often bring in hundreds of room nights. A big convention will bring in thousands of room nights. Anyone who decides to act like the big rock acts of the 1970's will almost certainly become persona non grata there. And record companies won't throw money at such situations the way they did in the 70's, either. It's easiest to find me on Facebook.
