conorbassman
Hi, i've been playing a lot of slap lately, and i have tried lots of different tone settings on my amp and bass, but i'm not really sure what sounds the best... wat is the most common tone setting when playing slap? jeremy c
Lots of bass, lots of treble, no middle. Free download of my cd!.
BenLoy
If you have a Fender Jazz bass, turn both pickups all the way up. Boom, classic slap tone.
theTragicRich
I generally go with a flat EQ (though I have the bass boost on my amp turned up a little) and as above, both pickups on. Wally Malone
In addition to what is above if your bass has two pickups that can be panned then favor the neck pickup. Wally I have basses to play, places to be and good music to make!
jeremy c
If you have a Fender Jazz bass, turn both pickups all the way up. I didn't know there were any other settings on a Jazz bass. And I've owned one for 36 years. Free download of my cd!.
cblinkdude182
I personally like to have a little middle especially on songs like Higher Ground when your popping the D string...But thats my young opinion.
Phil W
The poster asked for the most common tone setting for slap. This would definitely be the all bass and treble, no middle approach. However, this requires plenty of headroom so these days I leave the EQ flat. I favour the neck pick-up for slap and I heard Marcus Miller say similar. It's also good to slap over the fingerboard at about the 19th/20th fret. http://philwbass.com
Davo-London
I didn't know there were any other settings on a Jazz bass. And I've owned one for 36 years. Huh? I only use the bridge PU, I was thinking of sending the other one back. DavidMPires
Using my Spector I pretty much use both pickups all the way up, and treble and bass on the midle, sometimes to cut a bit more i'll go all the way up with treble. www.myspace.com/davidbassportugal "And then the magical unicorn will come prancing down the rainbow and we'll all join hands for a rousing chorus of Kumbaya." - by davio
Bass-a-roni
As a general rule, scoop the mids for Slap, favoring the neck p/u. In fingerstyle, I tend to leave the bass/ treble settings alone and bring mids up to about 3/4 - or - instead of changing anything, just favor the bridge pickup. A trick I use is a rapid full-string harmonic stroke index fingernail on all strings on the 12th fret. While it is ringing, slowly favor the bridge p/u until you hear a bell-like sound. On my 5 string Fender Jazz w/ barts, this is the sweet spot I use for fingerstyle. "Yeah, I've got a special effect - it's this cable.
