The Big G
Guys Just a quick question, which was raised in my mind due to a comment by Bluesape on another thread. I am also sure it been asked before but i would like to hear other views. He mentioned his new band "dont drink" at rehearsals!!!!! now is drinking the norm for most bands? as i have been in a couple and rehearsals were always drink free, its time to get your sh!t together not time to drink. I have a good few mates who play in bands and again no drink at rehearsals. Now Blues sounded happy and suprised by this.!!!!???? Let me know what happens in your band rehearsals and is drink a good or a bad thing at these times. Just very curious. tea and cigarettes are allowed G Love life, some twists and turns are more painful than others, but love life..... http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=592101
bennyguitfiddle
The Band that I was in (just split up) had a no Drink at Gigs policy. or at least til the last set anyway. It had become a problem. everyone in the band at onetime or nother has had too much to drink, so we curbed it.As far as practice it was never a problem.a little"drink"or even a little "smoke" was welcome.I personally quit drinking about 1 1/2 yrs ago afterI was in a wreck.a car load of teenagers swerved at my me and hit me head on.the driver was trying to scare his girlfiend.I had just come from the bar and had 3 beers my friends.I blew 0.08 and went to JAIL!!!THANKS A$$-hole going to jail sucked and I guess a beer just ain't worth it to me any more. gosh I can't beilieve that was a year and half ago ps totaled my truck too. Why do you lay down? I say that it beats standing up! whats got you feeling so down? I hold up my empty cup!

Bluesape
Good to see this policy in place. Far too many players are lushes, and are of course in denial about it. Bands that have the discipline to rehearse and play straight will sound tighter. I'll still keep my Toronto band for gigs in that area, and we've never rehearsed, just play stuff we know or I'll teach them a new tune onstage - a more loose approach, but we pull it off. Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Sometimes never!

Strategery
Hell, what's wrong with "A" beer or glass of wine? That impairs nothing or no one. One unusual thing for me though. If I play my banjo doing some bluegrass...I can't drink a drop. The reason is it requires a very tight timing on the right hand finger picking and any alcohol in my system screws that up for me. Getting drunk at a practice or gig? HELL NO!! A short snort to smooth out the nerves and get your groove on?DAMN STRAIGHT!! Randy "Just play!"
Dr. Ellwood
Nope NO drinking, no smoke at rehearsals! Two drink limit at gigs for the entire duration of the gig. Soda, Tea,Coffee or water at rehearsals. The best thing to smooth out nerves is good rehearsal, then there is no reason for nerves at all! http://www.thestringnetwork.com
Strategery
There's no reason to have nerves at a rehearsal. It's just the fellas playing. But geez, a beer or wine at rehearsal should cause no problems. I'm not talking about getting soused!! I don't like smoking either, even though I'm an ex smoker. In the clubs, there's going to be plenty of smoke. I hope that doesn't cause any problems. I love playing and it's my free time. You may be a Pro and do it for a living. But on my free time, even while playing...a drink or two at rehearsal shouldn't be out of line. Randy "Just play!"
Dr. Ellwood
Is it THAT necessary? who can't wait a couple of hours to have a drink? It's a totally different set of circumstances with a pro band, the free time hobby thing is another world, in that case you are correct, it doesn't matter at all. http://www.thestringnetwork.com
Hardtail
But geez, a beer or wine at rehearsal should cause no problems. I'm not talking about getting soused!! Nor is just waiting until rehearsal's over with if one needs a drink so badly. After rehearsal, I don't care what the rest of the guys do. I just want no alcohol while rehearsal's going on. It may sound harsh but it's my time as much as theirs that I'm giving for rehearsal. I don't ask for much but this I insist on. Trucks
I guess it depends if you start to sweat and shake if you let the alcohol leave your system :-) In that case, although rehab is probably the REAL answer, maybe a drink at rehearsal would be Ok. lol Soundclick Myspace
Billster
If you work in a bank, do you drink in the break room while not facing customers? It's a strange line to have to deal with. Griffinator
If you work in a bank, do you drink in the break room while not facing customers? I recall talking to one of the Swedish engineers when I worked at the Ericsson plant here in town (before they closed down) - he told me they had beer in the vending machines at Ericsson HQ in Sweden. He also told me it really wasn't that uncommon - that plenty of companies allowed their employees to drink at their meal breaks - it was only the Americans that were so uptight about alcohol. So, depending on your culture, yeah, you might have a drink in the break room when not facing customers... A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends. Billster
Totally Griff. The trouble with what passes for culture in the U.S. is that everything is the biggest, loudest, fastest, mostest is bestest (I'm channeling FZ here - he was talking about guitar players, so it connects ) The French take three hour business lunches, with wine, and then work until 8:00 p.m. American culture is geared toward excess, so when the pendullum swings the other way the idea of moderation becomes absolute banishment. Griffinator
See, that's my whole approach, Bill. I'll have a couple beers at practice, because a couple beers over the course of 4-5 hours isn't going to hamper my performance. However, I had to formally apologize to the rest of the band after one practice a few months back - my lower back was screaming bloody murder at me at the outset of practice (I have a fractured vertebrae and two ruptured discs down there), and the singer's g/f gave me what she stated was a "light" painkiller - that plus two beers and I was out on my feet an hour into the session. Not cool. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
Strategery
I lived in Germany for 3 years. They don't have the hang ups about a beer over there like we do here. Kids even at the age of 16 are allowed to drink in a pub but have to leave by 10:00pm. I guess it must be a Southern thing. It's a little more laid back down here. I will agree with you though. If someone is drunk at rehearsal, their a$$es get kicked out! Randy "Just play!"
