get a nice tone live?We just played saturday night and the sound guy told me to dial in a good bedroom tone then he would mic me,so i had a nice buttery tone going on with my deluxe and when put the mic on it turned it in to a razor sharp thin sound.I know at times it has to be done but i hate being at the mercy of a sound guy.Other then that had a good time and the guys that ran the sound liked us :crazy:and want to book us some gigs this summer. Sweeeet!

We used to skip the "Sound Guy" thing all together. We had a great big, Hill, 24 channel studio board, set up on stage with us. The monitors were playing the FOH mix, minus most of the drums of course. It was a great way to do it. It was more like playing in the studio, as you could hear exactly where you were in the mix. Only down side was, there were no amps allowed on stage. Everything was run direct. But once you were used to it, it made it almost impossible to go back.

Yep you can, but not always live with a soundguy who does not know you and your tone you are after. Soundguys are like guitar players, so good some not so good and some horriable! Our soundguy can get you exactly what you want, but then he's worked with us so long he just knows. When we have worked with other soundguys it's hit and miss it seems.

I can remember only a few times i had a good tone going on,one time is when i turned off my mic.The sound guy freaked when i did it but i had better control of what i like to do and sometimes i like to use a little feedback.

Its funny that I really didn't get on my tone quest till late in the game. After years of gigging I started to become aware how bad my sound was. By the time I really started getting it together, I was no longer playing in bands.

There are lots of variables on how you are going to sound live. Its not just your guitar ad amp anymore. The PA and the room and how many people in it just make things hard. I like a pretty wet sound but in some rooms it just gets lost. The drums usually sound horrible onstage to me as well. Moving out of a 10'x20' room makes the drums lose all their punch. And miced drums don't sound real to me. Vocals usually sound better in a big room for some reason, but we were very conscious of the singer being well monitered so that helped, a big room just seemed to open up the vocals.

Hey, play jazz. You're in a smaller venue, so there's no PA and you have total control. No one pays any attention to you either. :D

No, seriously...

Live sound is a different beast. Just as a tip, if you thought the PA sound was thin, ask the guy to move the microphone closer to your amp if possible. Another idea is to bring your own mic that you know hasn't been abused - just make sure it is clearly labeled. A lot of singers bring their own mic.

The sound guy might have feedback considerations to deal with, so there may be something dialed in weird that way. The room will sound different when it's full of people too.

If it's a club PA, ask if the board was zeroed since the last show. Ask if they always use the same channels for guitars, vocals, etc. That's an OK idea, but beware the guy that doesn't change the board for different acts. Next thing you know, no one has moved the EQ or fader since 1989, and the "guitar channel" got set up for some guy using a Marshall stack; then you show up with a Fender Princeton...
