Dr. Ellwood
One of my first guitars, well maybe fifth or so, anyways was a Epiphone Casino. I remember it being a great instrument but I sold it for something else that is long gone now LOL! I was thinking of picking up a old one if I can find one, but is anyone playing a new version of this guitar? How are the new ones? build quality, detail. playability etc? http://www.thestringnetwork.com
LeftyBlues
Ellwood, I bought one about a year ago and love it. The electronics are not the greatest, tone pots seem to be either on or off, and the 3 way toggle switch rattles in the mid position. The neck play great and pups sound nice, overall fit and finish very nice. I paid $600 for mine but you right handers can get them new for $100 less I believe. The lefty Casino's were out of production last year but I lucked out and found one with natural finsh, so I snatched it up. Definitely a keeper! L.B. Mudcat
Ellwood - You would probably be better off getting a new Elitist version Casino instead of tracking down a vintage model from the 60s. The old ones go for stupid money. Elitist are reasonably priced and are great guitars. A new Elitist Casino gies for $1,349 at Musicians Friend. The standard Epiphone Casinos go for $599. I've played an Elitist Casino and I was very impressed. The fit & finish were top notch and the Elitists use Gibson USA pick-ups and Electronics. Mudcat's music on Soundclick "Work hard. Rock hard. Squ
I bought a new Epi Casino a year or two ago and it's very nice! I second lefty blues though, on the electronics being a bit doggy. Sometimes the tone/vol knobs have a little crackle when you turn them, but it seems that after you turn them back and forth a few times they "Warm up" and stop crackling. And actually some piece of electronics fell into the body and we had to do some expert poking/fishing around for it with pencils and stuff... I don't remember this in too much detail so unfortunately I can't tell you what it was. I'll still recommend it though. When you pick it up, just take a good once over at the individual guitar and do your best to make sure it's well built. Red Red Rockit
BillWelcome Home Studios
A couple of my friends own old ones, and I've played one in a band many years ago. Love the sound, love the feel. Now that they have become so popular, I could not afford one. I've played the new ones, and they were a yawn. ($400 washburns and Samicks were at least as good, if not better.) In my opinion, they are selling on looks. I have not played the upscale model mentioned above. Strategery
I tried one out at GC in Atlanta and it was cool to play. I wound up buying a Gretsch Nashville though because they made me an offer I couldn't refuse and the Epi didn't have a Bigsby on it, which was a HAVE TO for me. I got it for $1300 with case. I saw in MF a while back where they were offering the Casino with a Bigsby. Had they had that to begin with, I probably would've gone for the savings with the Epi. Randy "Just play!" Squ
Strategery, have you ended up using the bigsby much? I've tried a few out but couldn't imagine too many places where I personally would use it. And what styles do you use it in? Red Red Rockit

Strategery
Hey Squ... Yeah, when I strap on the Gretsch, I use my Bigsby quite a good bit. It just has a great sound and feel. I don't know what it is. You could use it in almost any kind of music. Rockabilly for sure but also in rocknroll as well. A Bigsby just has a really nice MUSICAL sound to it. It's really different from my Strat. Randy Same here. I do a lot of spooky sounding rock-a-billy influenced stuff using the Bigsby on my Gretsch in conjunction with some delay and reverb. There's nothing quite like a whammied minor 9th chord with some nice long repeats. Back in my garage rocking days I would get some nice overdriven feedback going and then use the Bigsby to modulate the feedback. I never had much trouble with it knocking my guitar out of tune unless I really went crazy with it. I only did this deliberately on some over-the-top numbers that we only played at the end of a set or at the end of the gig. Mudcat's music on Soundclick "Work hard. Rock hard. Eat hard. Sleep hard. Strategery
HAHAHA, yep, definitely at the end of a set. Yeah, I've never had a Bigsby til I bought my Gretsch and was just bowled over with the sound. I don't do much dive bombing anyway. Just not my style. Now on my Strat, I don't use the bar near as much. "Just play!"
Dr. Ellwood
Ok back to the Casino for awhile. Does anyone know if there are different neck profiles available? http://www.thestringnetwork.com
Bejeeber
In my opinion, they are selling on looks. Dang, because IMO they do look shweet! Sure would be interesting to compare an original side by side with the new models. Just a pinch between the geek and chum
The Big G
Well Lee, i dont have a casino but have tried a good few over the past year or two, new ones :the general finish is mainly pretty good, the necks are great (well i like them)(normally have the frets dressed) the pups are real good (dog ear P90's), without being brilliant, like my riveria the electrics arent its strongest suit (can be a little erratic) but they do give a great sound, with jangly highs and some lovely warm lows. For the money the news ones are pretty good value. I cant say i would pay the hyped price for a 60's one but a good secondhand one a few years old thats nicely played in will do just great. But i have to admit to being biased towards Casino's and Riverias a little as they do caputre that sound from their era I think the odd small upgrade or bit of work on them and you get a great guitar..... I would also say that playing live can be a little tricky as they can feedback quite easily but cant they all... G We need more hollowbody guitars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gruupi
I played a friends Casino and was really surprised how good it sounded. It was a quality guitar all around. I did not like the neck though, it was tiny, I am used to wider necks playing classical and all. I didn't expect the guitar to be so nice, most Epiphones I have played have been low quality. This one was top notch.
