Sound-sculpting help needed

I posted this over in the sninety.com forum but thought I'd try the good folks here at the KC as well . . . .

My band is learning "Everything You Want" by Vertical Horizon, and I've been asked to cover the part that opens the song on keys, even though I'm pretty confident that the part was originally played by electric guitar (it sounds like a guitar having its volume knob cranked quickly up and down by hand with each note being played, if you know what I mean).

As many of you know, I own an S90ES, and I was hoping some of you other Yammy owners here might give me some advice on how to get even a decent approximation of that sound.

If you want to give the song a listen to hear what I'm talking about, check out the Vertical Horizon myspace page: CLONK HERE. It's the third song available in their "play" section, and the sound I'm looking for is literally the first thing you hear in the song.

Thanks for any help/guidance you can provide!!

Noah

P.S. Since I'm adding an Alesis Micron to my rig this week, I'd also welcome your thoughts if you think it would be easier to program the sound I'm looking for on that board.

Yeah, that's a guitar most likely with an automated volume envelope on it. I don't have an S90, so unfortunately I can't really help you design the sound, but your instincts were right. Take a clean-ish guitar patch and start messing around.
A ROMpler is just a polyphonic turntable.

You've got a nice clean opening there. I'd just sample and loop it. I realize you don't own a sampler (from what you've described), but they can be had pretty cheap. Or just a simple recorder or MP3 player. That's what I'd do.

That would definitely be the easy way! :thu: Call me old-fashioned, but I still think of that as "cheating" (sort of). At the moment, our band doesn't use any sampled sounds or sequences when we play, but maybe it's time to reconsider that approach!

Thanks,

Noah

Nice guy over at the sninety forum (who used to play this song in his band) was kind enough to send me a file containing the patch he used. It's dead on.

The Internet age truly is a wonder, although my synth programming skills can't be expected to improve if this keeps up! ;)
