Phil W
Last night one of our wonderful BBC channels showed 'Do Not Panic' a somewhat one-sided documentary on space rockers Hawkwind. As a teenager, Hawkwind and Gong were my biggest influences. Hawkwind were truly something else. Lemmy was relaxed and insightful in his interviews . . . letting on that the first time he ever even held a bass was on stage with the band after his friend recommended him for the gig. The anti-money motives of the culture that the band came out of seem very alien now - as they became to the band themselves eventually. The drugs and debauchery tales were interesting as were the stories about Stacia and the the chance to see her with the band. The sheer enjoyment of the sonic experimentation was the main theme that came across though. It's a pity that the drug issues and the battles within the band prevented Hawkwind being better known in the States. http://philwbass.com
Mike Chini
Just listened to some Hawkwind in the car an hour ago! I think Lemmy's bass playing was the most interesting part of the record. He did something with every groove instead of just riding one note. And his sound was there from the beginning!
The Geoff
There's a band which performs down in Devon occasionally which is reputed to be 1/2 of Hawkwind. I've seen their gig advertised in Ilfracombe. So it's said, anyway. G. Danzilla
Hawkwind is playing at NEARfest this June. I have some friends who are going, and trying to convince me to; it's just bad timing. If I end up going, I'll let you know how they were. I'd be going more to see Izz than Hawkwind, though. (And Alan Holdsworth if we went up for the Friday neight pre-fest-show) "Am I enough of a freak to be worth paying to see?"- Separated Out (Marillion) NEW band Old band
...
Lemmy just destroyed my inner child. And I loved it. btw - there is a link off that page to the story of Lemmy being fired from Hawkwind. It's a very entertaining 3 minutes and I encourage viewing. Preferably at high volumes because that's what Lemmy would want you to do.
Phil W
I'm reading 'The Saga of Hawkwind' by Carol Clerk (Omnibus). Quite a hefty paperback at around 600 pages. Fascinating to read of their very first ten minute gig when they got signed to their management company. Not tunes, freeform - two guitars feedinf back a la Hendrix, an audio generator making starnge noises, avant-garde saxophone and powerhouse bass and drums. Not sure a band like that'd get signed nowadays. Also fascinating to read of Huw Lloyd Langton's road to Damascus type experience on the A23; calling out to God and havin gthat bizarre spiritual experience - as did his then-girlfriend in the car and eventually finding Christianity after too many bad drugs. http://philwbass.com
Phil W
I decided to try to express my Hawkwind influence through music (without the aid of narcotics! ) I always thought the best psychedelic music tried to create moods, colours and trips that could be appreciated without drugs. http://www.soundclick.com/util/downloadSong.cfm?ID=5245843&key=7E32F61A-D My take on my Hawkwind influence. It's fairly noisy as it's recorded at low volume. There's an appaling clunker at 5.02 I must edit that out when I get the time! http://www.soundclick.com/util/downloadSong.cfm?ID=5245852&key=7E32F61A-D That one's less succesful - more of a draft. http://philwbass.com
Phil W
I would definitely have been sacked if I'd played like that in Hawkwind though. http://philwbass.com

Mike Chini
Nice job! I think you nailed their style/genre whatever. Nice tone too! I agree about them not getting signed nowadays. Not a chance (IMO).
