Well... in the shower and in my car. Since neither of these things will be available to me at rehearsal, I'm on my own. LOL!

Thanks to all those who gave me good advice on a mic.

You got good advice but you still bought an SM58??!!

Scott Fraser

THAT was NOT necessary at all! MR.AUDIOFILE!! I bet there is not one player on here that has gigged for many years that has not used a SM58 many many times and had them do a great job for them! If you mean that there are better more expensive mikes, that's easy..of coarse there are! everybody knows that, he didn't get bad advise at all.

I wish I had one. I spent so much darn $$ on gear last year (I went absolutely nuts with gear trying to battle loneliness. Lets See: Roland VS2400CD, BBE 882i rackmount, Behringer Ultragain Pro mic preamp, a pair of Roland DS-5 monitors, Neutrik patchbay, Behringer Tube Composer, AER Domino acoustic amp, TC Helicon VoiceOne vocal processor, 3 mic stands, and 2 SM57s) that I can't even afford a vocal mic. I'm sick of trying to sing through my SM57s! Enjoy!

Easy now, just having some fun here.

Or if not a great job, at least a good enough job. And I've used them thousands of times myself when there's nothing better in the house. It's a mic that gets the job done, at an affordable price. It's also a mic which has characteristics I find extremely unnattractive on a lot of voices.

If you mean that there are better more expensive mikes, that's easy..of coarse there are!

And there are better mikes in the same price range too.

He'll get good service out of it & it won't break. Like I say, I'm having some fun here, but it also is a mic I'm not at all fond of.

Try this; get the Shure foam pop screen for the SM57, the one with a metal ring that screws onto the body of the mic, & use the 57 for vocals. It is, in my & a lot of other engineer's opinions, a much better vocal mic than the SM58. Less muddy in the 125Hz to 175Hz range.

Hey, Warthog, I just got back from 2 weeks in South Korea on tour. Kinda hard to find a meal that isn't kimchee or bibambap. You been there quite a while, right?

Yes...and I HATE Korean food. Can't stand it. I've been here almost a year and I've eaten out on the economy about 5 times.

I have to disagree with you Scott. Watching concerts, I see that 95% of the performers are using SM58s. Obviously the consensus goes beyond our forum.

Yep I have noticed that too. I think for live use you cant beat having Mics you can stomp on/drop boxs on top of/throw at your drummer.. etc and still work.

For studio use, im sure there are a thousand more mics which you are going ot get better results from.

I personally, like to Mic acoustic guitars with an SM58, something which a pro sound tech friend of mine, offered to kick me square in the nuts for doing.

Ha... that sounds like something from a Monty Python skit.

Would you like to be kicked square in the nuts today?

Oh no thank you... I got mine yesterday.

LOL!

Hey Hardtail...

That mic will last you so long the only thing you'll have to worry about....is the FUNKY SCREEN SMELL!

Be sure to unscrew it and wash that sucker every now and then.

If you don't, the end will look like a Chia Pet.

And don't let any drunks sing through it! :P

Enjoy!! :)

This is the best advice you will ever get from this place. The bar guy, beer smell, WILL NOT GO AWAY. You've been warned.

Thanks... I'll heed the warning.

If you want something that will give you the perfect waveform on an oscilloscope for a particular frequency and amplitude of sound, there are probably microphones that will do that better than a SM58.

If you want a practical and tough workhorse of a microphone that will handle vocals very well AND will even do a reasonable job with most acoustic instruments...for a reasonable price...you just can't beat an SM58 or SM57.

Personally, I don't spend a lot of time looking at waveforms and I'm pretty sure the audience can't tell the difference.

That's the thing, just how good is the quality of your P.A. system, your mixing board, even the room you are listening in?

Putting an expensive mic through a regular "bar band" set up, is like putting high def tv, through a radio.

YEah.

I had a friend of mine that played a club on a friday night, got there on the saturday evening to find out the entire club had burned to the ground!

He lost EVERYTHING to include a damn nice Goldtop Les Paul.

It put a hurtin' on him really bad! :(
